His son was not a dramatic kid. He didn't manufacture crises or seek attention. But on a Thursday evening about 6 weeks after Clare had moved in, Darius came out to the porch where Marcus was sitting and stood in the doorway with the look on his face that meant something actual was happening. There's a man at Miss Clare's house, Darius said. He's yelling.

Marcus was on his feet before Darius finished the sentence. He came around the side of the house and stopped at the corner where he could see Clare's front porch without putting himself in the middle of whatever was happening. There was a man standing on her porch steps. He was somewhere in his mid-40s, broad- shouldered, and he was not yelling, not technically, but his voice had that compressed controlled fury in it that was sometimes worse than yelling. The kind of voice that's trying to stay just below the threshold of something.

Clare was standing at her front door. Her arms were crossed. Her face was very still, the kind of still that takes work to maintain. Said he wanted me to have access to those records. The man was saying it's in his notes.

You know it's in his notes, Clare. So stop acting like you don't, Ryan. Clare said, and her voice was completely flat. David's been gone for 4 years. Whatever he wrote in a personal journal is not a legal document.

And you know that. It's not about legal. Then what is it about? It's about what he wanted. You didn't know what David wanted, she said quietly.

You barely knew David, the man Ryan took a half step forward. Not threatening, but not backing down either. He was my brother. I know who he was, Clare said. Better than you did, and I'm asking you to leave.

Marcus had moved closer without consciously deciding to. He was standing at the edge of his driveway now in clear line of sight from the porch. Ryan looked over and saw him. Marcus didn't say anything. He just stood there 200 lb 5'11 in his work clothes with his arms at his sides looking at Ryan Whitmore the way a man looks at another man when he wants the second man to understand something without either of them having to escalate it.

It worked. Ryan looked back at Clare. This isn't over, he said. It was over a long time ago, Clare said. Ryan walked to his car.

He didn't slam the door. He closed it deliberately, which was somehow more unsettling and then he drove away. Marcus didn't move until the car was out of sight. Clare stood on her porch for a moment and then she looked over at Marcus. She didn't say thank you.

She didn't say anything. She just looked at him with an expression that was exhausted and grateful in equal measure. And he nodded once and she went inside. She came over that night. It was after 9 after Darius was in bed and Marcus was at the kitchen table pretending to read a service manual when he heard the knock.

He opened the door. She was standing on his porch steps with her hands in the pockets of a cardigan that was too thin for the night air. And she looked like someone who had been carrying something heavy for a long time and was finally ready to put it down, but wasn't entirely sure how. Can I? She started.
