An ordinary evening. An extraordinary ordinary evening. 3 days later, Marcus came home from work to find a note tucked into the handle of his back door. Paper folded once. He opened it.

Clare's handwriting. Just two lines. The fence needs another board on the south end. I thought you should know. Also, I made chili.

Come over when you're ready. Marcus read it twice. He went inside, changed out of his work clothes, grabbed his jacket, and went next door. She opened the door before he knocked. How'd you know?

He said, "I heard your van," she said. He walked in. The chili was on the stove. The kitchen was warm. The porch light was on outside, visible through the window, doing what it had done every night since October, burning steady and faithful and amber in the dark.

He sat at her kitchen table. She put a bowl in front of him. He ate. She sat across from him. They talked about his day, a refrigerator in Hillsboro that had given him problems.

He finally traced to a faulty door sensor, which was always the last thing you checked. She told him she'd gotten a call from a marketing firm in Durham that had seen her freelance portfolio online and wanted to meet her voice when she said it was different than it had been 2 months ago. Not the careful managed voice of a woman holding herself together, but the voice of someone who was looking forward, someone who was building towards something. You should take the meeting, Marcus said. I'm going to, she said.

What changed? He asked about wanting to work again. She looked at him. I started wanting things again, she said simply. It kind of opened everything back up.

He held her gaze. Yeah, he said. It does that, she smiled. And then Darius knocked and came in. He knocked at Clare's back door now, which he had started doing two weeks ago without anyone suggesting it and dropped his bag by the door and said, "Is there enough for me?"

Clare was already getting up to get a bowl. Darius sat next to Marcus and looked at the chili and looked at Clare and looked at his father and said, "Good day." "Yeah," Marcus said. "Good day, Clare." Darius said, "You put cornbread in the chili."

I put cornbread in the chili, she confirmed. My mom used to do that, he said. The kitchen was quiet for one beat. Clare set the bowl in front of him gently. I know, she said.
