Something that had seen the edge of the world and come back changed. Somebody who used to fly the things nobody else would. Marcus said quietly. And then he was gone. The next morning, Evelyn Carter was drowning.

The demonstration was one day away. Her replacement pilot was a hotshot named Cortez, who'd never touched the SR-9. Her investors were nervous. The government liaison had begun using words like timeline concerns and reevaluation. And her structural engineer had just walked into her office and told her the aircraft might tear itself apart.

On whose authority? She demanded. Whose analysis? Because it's not your department's. I've read every report.

Nobody flagged this. It's Daniel hesitated. It came from an outside observation. Someone who's been watching the aircraft under load every day for weeks. Who?

Daniel Okafor looked at the floor. Marcus, he said. The maintenance. Get out. Ms.

Carter. You're standing in my office one day before the demonstration that decides whether 900 people keep their jobs telling me my aircraft is unsafe because the janitor said so. Her voice was ice. Do you understand how that sounds? Do you understand what you're doing to my confidence in you?

I'm doing my job. Daniel said and his voice cracked, but he held his ground. I checked his math, Ms. Carter. Every line.

It's right. I don't know how, but it's right. And if you fly that aircraft tomorrow at the planned RPM, I think you're going to lose it. And I couldn't live with staying quiet. For one heartbeat, something flickered behind Evelyn's eyes, then pride slammed the door shut.
