My name is Marvin and I was married to my wife, Veronica, for 20 years before I discovered what she was capable of doing behind my back. I was 46 and Veronica was 44. We had built a comfortable life together. We owned two cars, had savings in the bank, and lived in a house I had purchased several years before our wedding. We had our disagreements like any married couple, but I never believed our relationship was on the verge of ending.

At least I didn’t believe that until the weekend of her friend's bachelorette party. Veronica had been talking about the party for almost a month. Her friend Melissa was getting married, and a group of women had planned a night out in a city about an hour and a half away. According to Veronica, they would have dinner, visit a few bars, and spend the night at a hotel before returning the following afternoon. Normally, I wouldn’t have objected to her spending time with friends.

I had my own friends and interests, and I never expected my wife to ask permission before making ordinary plans, but I knew this particular group. I had attended enough gatherings with them to understand that a quiet dinner wasn’t usually how their evenings ended. Alcohol was involved. Boundaries became a joke, and the more reckless someone acted, the more attention they received. When Veronica told me she planned to go, I asked whether she had considered staying sober enough to make sensible decisions.

She stared at me as if I had insulted her. "I’m going away for one night, Marvin. I’m not joining a criminal organization." That's not what I said. I know how these nights usually go with your friends. Then maybe you should stop judging people you barely know.

I’ve met them plenty of times. She crossed her arms. "Melissa is getting married. I’m going to celebrate with her." I’m not spending 20 years of my life asking my husband for permission to have fun. I put down the newspaper I'd been reading.

You're not asking permission. I’m telling you I don’t like the situation and I think you’re being dismissive of a reasonable concern. She shook her head and walked away before I could say anything else. The argument continued over the next two days. Every time I tried to discuss it calmly, Veronica accused me of being controlling.

Eventually, I stopped bringing it up. I wasn’t interested in spending the week fighting over a party, and I wasn’t going to follow her around the house, begging her to take my concerns seriously. On Friday evening, she packed an overnight bag and began getting ready. While she was in the bathroom, her phone lit up on the bedroom dresser. I had no intention of reading her private conversations, but the notification appeared across the screen, and I saw the preview before the display went dark.

It was from someone in the party group. The message said the night was going to be wild, that everyone needed to be ready for surprises, and that nobody should leave before the fun really started. I looked toward the bathroom. Veronica was still getting ready. When she came out, I asked who had sent the message and what the surprise was supposed to be.

She glanced at her phone and shrugged. "Probably something Melissa planned. Maybe a game or a surprise guest. I don’t know." You don’t know, but you’re going anyway. She gave me an irritated look.

"Marvin, I’m not discussing this again." Fine, but don’t pretend I never raised my concerns. She grabbed her bag, gave me a quick, distracted kiss on the cheek, and walked out. I watched her car disappear down the driveway. Then, I stood in the quiet house, thinking about the message and the way she had avoided answering a simple question. I didn’t know whether she intended to do anything wrong.

I wasn’t going to accuse her without evidence, either, but I wasn’t going to sit around all night wondering what was happening. I took out my phone and called a private investigator whose number I found through a local professional directory. I explained that I needed discreet documentation of my wife's activities during the evening, including where she went and whom she met. I wasn’t looking for trouble. I wanted facts.

By the time I finished the call, I had made one decision. Whatever happened that night, I would deal with the truth rather than another argument. The investigator's name was Leonard Price. He was a former insurance investigator who specialized in documenting suspected infidelity and other personal matters. During our first call, he had been professional and direct.

He explained what he could document, how the photographs would be delivered, and why he couldn’t guarantee what he would find. I appreciated that. I wasn’t paying someone to tell me what I wanted to hear. I wanted an accurate account of Veronica’s evening. After she left, I spent the first few hours at home trying to occupy myself.

I watched television, prepared dinner, and checked the clock more often than I cared to admit. Part of me felt ridiculous. Veronica was an adult, and I had no proof that she was doing anything wrong. Perhaps I had overreacted to an ordinary message between friends. Perhaps the party would end with a few drinks and a late dinner, and she would return the next morning annoyed that I had questioned her plans.

But another part of me remembered how quickly she had shut down every conversation about the evening. It wasn’t proof of an affair, but it was enough to make me uncomfortable. Around 10:30, Leonard called to confirm that he had located Veronica and the group at a restaurant in the city. They had finished dinner and moved to a nearby bar. He hadn’t observed anything unusual yet.

I thanked him and ended the call. For a while, I felt relieved. That was what I had expected to hear. Veronica was out with her friends drinking and celebrating. There was nothing suspicious about that by itself.

Then shortly after midnight, my phone rang again. Leonard told me that Veronica had separated from the group outside the bar and begun talking to a man I didn’t recognize. They had stood close together for several minutes, laughing and touching each other's arms. He had continued observing them from a distance. I asked whether the man appeared to be someone she already knew.

Leonard couldn’t say for certain, but their behavior suggested they weren’t meeting for the first time. I sat down at the kitchen table. Keep documenting what happens, I told him. Don't approach them or interfere. A few minutes later, Veronica sent me a message explaining that the group had decided to stay out later than expected.

She said she would probably spend the night in the city and return the next day. I read it twice. She hadn’t mentioned the man. She hadn’t called to discuss the change of plans. She had simply informed me that she wasn’t coming home.

I replied that I understood and hoped she would get back safely. I deliberately kept my response neutral. If I confronted her before I knew what had happened, she could deny everything and I would be left arguing over suspicions. At around 1 in the morning, Leonard sent me several photographs. In the first few, Veronica and the man were standing outside the bar.
