"You're right, baby," he said. "The scary part's already done. " He didn't know yet that the scary part was still to come. The time was 11:00 in the morning when the ceremony began. Evelyn Carter took the stage, and the crowd of thousands quieted, and she stood at the microphone in the same kind of setting where a year and a quarter earlier she had pointed at a janitor and made 600 people laugh. She was aware of the symmetry.

Everyone who knew the story was aware of it. And she had thought carefully about what she wanted to say. A little over a year ago, Evelyn began, "I stood on a stage very much like this one, and I did something I will regret for the rest of my life. " The crowd went silent. This was not the corporate speech they'd expected. "I looked at a man who worked for me," Evelyn said, "a man in a maintenance uniform, a man I had walked past every single morning for 3 years without ever once seeing, and I made him the punchline of a joke.

In front of 600 people, I mocked him. I told him that if he could fly this helicopter, I would marry him. And everyone laughed. I laughed. " Her voice was steady, but her hands were not. "I laughed at one of the most decorated experimental pilots this country has ever produced because he was holding a mop, and I had decided that a man holding a mop could not possibly be worth my attention. " She looked out over the thousands of faces.

"I was wrong," she said. "I was wrong in a way that nearly cost a man his life, that nearly destroyed this company, and that revealed something ugly in me that I have spent the last year trying to fix. And I am standing up here today in front of all of you to say it plainly, because I said the cruel thing in public, and the apology should be public, too. " She took a breath. "The man I mocked is named Marcus Bennett, and he is without question the finest human being I have ever known. " In the crowd, Marcus went very still. This was not what he'd expected, either.

"When our aircraft had a flaw that my entire engineering department couldn't find," Evelyn continued, "Marcus Bennett found it while mopping the floor. When our test pilot was in danger, Marcus warned us, and we didn't listen. When there was no one left to fly the demonstration that would decide the fate of this company, Marcus Bennett climbed into an aircraft he knew might kill him because a man was going to die if he didn't, and he had spent his whole life being the person who steps forward when others step back. " Her voice caught. "And then after he saved all of us, after he did the most extraordinary thing any of us had ever seen, do you know what he did? He left.

He walked out of the most important room in the country to go pick up his daughter from school, because that's who he is. That's who he's always been. " She turned, and she found Marcus in the crowd standing with Lily's hand in his, and she looked at him across all those thousands of people. "Marcus," she said into the microphone, "would you come up here, please, and bring Lily? " Marcus hesitated. Every instinct in him, nine years of instinct, screamed at him to stay in the crowd, to stay invisible, to stay safe. And then Lily tugged his hand.

"Come on, Daddy," she whispered. "She's asking you nice. " And Marcus Bennett, who could refuse the government and the investors and the reporters could never in his life refuse his daughter. So he walked up onto the stage holding his little girl's hand in front of thousands of people and three television networks and he stood beside Evelyn Carter next to the aircraft he'd brought home. The crowd was applauding thousands of people on their feet but Marcus barely heard them. He was watching Evelyn and Evelyn was watching him and there was something in her face he hadn't seen before.
