Not because you're a billionaire and not because you own this company and not because of anything you can give me. I'll marry you because I watched a proud woman become a humble one. And I watched a cruel joke become a true thing. And I watched somebody I could have hated turn into somebody I couldn't help but love. Because you did the hardest thing a person can do.

You changed. And a man would be a fool to walk away from that twice. " And the crowd of thousands erupted. But this time, it wasn't the cruel laughter of a year ago. This time, it was something else entirely. It was thousands of people on their feet cheering, weeping, applauding a wall of sound that shook the hangar and rolled out across the Texas morning.

The sound of an entire country that had watched a story of humiliation transform over the course of a year into a story of redemption. Evelyn Carter threw her arms around Marcus Bennett and she buried her face in his shoulder and the proudest woman in American aerospace wept openly in front of the whole world and Marcus held her and Lily wrapped her arms around both of them. And for one perfect moment, the three of them stood on that stage as the crowd roared and the cameras flashed and the story that had begun with a cruel joke found its true ending at last. In the crowd, Colonel Frank Hollis was on his feet clapping, tears streaming down his weathered face. And beside him stood a young woman he'd brought as his guest.

A woman in her early 30s holding the hand of a small child. And the young woman was crying, too. Though she'd never met Marcus Bennett in her life. Because the young woman was Petrov's widow. And the child was the baby who'd been born after her husband died.

The baby Marcus had carried in his heart for nine years. And Hollis had found them and brought them. And they had just watched the man who did everything he could to save their husband and father finally, finally get to be happy. After the ceremony, in the chaos of reporters and well-wishers, Petrov's widow found Marcus. She didn't say much.

She couldn't. She just took his hands in both of hers. And she looked up at him with her husband's child on her hip. And she said the thing that Marcus had needed to hear for nine years without ever knowing he needed to hear it. "Colonel Hollis told me the truth. " She said.

"The real truth. " "About what happened that day. " "About how hard you fought to bring him home. " "I spent nine years thinking my husband died in an accident nobody could have prevented. And now I know he died because people wouldn't listen to the one man who tried to save him. " "And I know that man carried it every single day since. " Her voice broke. "You don't have to carry it anymore, Marcus. " "You brought four men home that day. " "You did everything a person could do. " "And Danny. " She gestured to the child on her hip. The child named for a father he'd never met. "Danny is going to grow up knowing that the man who tried to save his daddy became the reason no other pilot ever dies that way again because of your program.
