Something that made his heart begin to beat harder. Marcus, Evelyn said and she'd lowered the microphone slightly and her voice had changed. It was quieter now, more personal. A year ago I said some words to you on a stage like this one. Cruel words.

Words I said to get a laugh and I have spent every day since then wishing I could take them back. Marcus said nothing. He couldn't. His throat had closed. But I've realized something, Evelyn said.

I've realized that I don't want to take them back. I want to earn them. A murmur went through the crowd. Somewhere a camera zoomed in and Marcus Bennett stood on that stage and understood all at once what was about to happen and every muscle in his body went rigid because this was the thing. This was the exact thing and there was nowhere to hide from it in front of the whole world.

For a year, Evelyn said and now her own voice was shaking. I have watched you be the finest man I've ever known. I've watched you put your daughter first always without exception. I've watched you fight for people nobody else believed in. I've watched you teach a room full of pilots that being right matters more than being fast and I've watched you make me into a person I actually like being.

I fell in love with you somewhere in the middle of all that Marcus and I didn't even notice it happening because it happened one honest day at a time. The crowd had gone completely silent. Thousands of people. Not a sound. So, I'm going to say those words again.

Evelyn said, the same words I said a year ago. But this time, I mean them with everything I am. She looked at him. She looked at the man she'd mocked, the man who'd saved her, the man who'd taught her how to see. I said I'd marry the man who could fly this helicopter, Evelyn Carter said, and the whole world held its breath.

And this time, nobody laughed. Because everyone in that crowd of thousands, everyone watching on three networks, everyone who had followed this story from the beginning, already understood that she wasn't joking. That she had never been more serious about anything in her life. That the cruel joke had over the course of a year, through honesty and change, and the slow hard work of becoming a better person, transformed itself into the truest thing she had ever said. Marcus Bennett stood on that stage, and he looked at Evelyn Carter, and for a long, long moment, he did not say anything at all.
