She had seen Jordan remove it. And she had said nothing. Now near the trash can, the folded page was still visible. Emily looked toward the hallway where three students had disappeared, laughing. Then she bent down, pulled the paper from the trash, stared at Jordan's distorted face for a long second, and tore the print out in half.

Jordan was already gone. Professor Hayes had seen Emily do it. She said nothing either. Not yet. Jordan crossed the quad toward the engineering lab.

He kept a small notebook in the side pocket of his backpack. Now by noon, it held four entries, a comment near the fountain, the meme, the anonymous note, a shoulder deliberately brushing his hard enough to spill coffee onto his sleeve outside the student union. None of the incidents seemed large alone. That was what made them useful. Each one could be explained away.

A joke, a misunderstanding, an accident. Jordan knew how patterns worked. Patterns depended on repetition, so he wrote everything down. At 2:15, Professor Hayes found him alone in the materials lab. He was recalibrating a strain gauge.

She leaned against the doorway. You've started keeping records. Jordan looked up. She nodded toward the notebook beside his elbow. He waited, then said, "Yes."

"Why?" Jordan adjusted the dial before answering. "Because memory gets called emotional." Professor Hayes's expression changed slightly. Jordan continued, "Dates don't."

She stepped into the room. What happened Friday? Nothing. I couldn't walk away from. That isn't what I asked.

Jordan looked at her. The lab hummed around them. Ventilation fans, electrical equipment, a printer clicking somewhere behind the partition. Jordan finally said they wanted a reaction and they didn't get one. Professor Hayes studied him.

Jordan, sometimes people mistake restraint for permission. I know. Do you? His jaw tightened. She saw it.

Jordan looked back down at the strain gauge. If I get angry, they'll remember the anger, not what caused it. The words came quietly. Professor Hayes stopped moving. For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she pulled out the stool across from him and sat. That sounds like something you've had to think about too many times. Jordan gave a small shrug. Professor Hayes didn't accept it. You are allowed to be angry.

I didn't say I wasn't. No, you just said you couldn't afford to show it. Jordan met her eyes. That was closer. She reached toward the notebook but did not touch it.

Keep documenting. Jordan frowned. You think it'll matter? I think truth needs structure. That sounded like her.

She stood. And Jordan? Yes. If anything becomes physical, you come to me. Jordan looked away.

Professor Hayes noticed. What? Nothing, Jordan. He exhaled. People see me before they see what happens to me.
