The first reversal came 48 hours later. Jordan was in the engineering lab when his phone rang. Unknown Crownbridge number. He almost let it go to voicemail. Then he answered, "Jordan Carter?"

"Yes, this is the Office of Academic Affairs." His hand tightened around the phone. "We're calling to inform you that the temporary hold on your graduation clearance has been lifted effective immediately." For several seconds, Jordan did not speak. The woman continued, "Your engineering internship certification has also been released.

Updated verification should reach your employer by the end of the business day. Jordan stared through the lab window. Students moved beneath a clear November sky. Everything looked normal. Why?

There was a pause. I'm sorry. Why was it lifted? The university has reviewed additional evidence. Jordan thought of Emily's uncut footage, the timestamp, Tyler's punch, Chase grabbing him, Logan submitting an altered version.

So, you believe me now? Another pause. The university has determined there is insufficient basis to continue the academic holds while the conduct matter is reviewed. Careful words, no apology, no admission, just a door reopening after somebody realized too many people had seen who closed it. Jordan thanked her anyway.

Old habit. Then he hung up. Professor Hayes entered moments later carrying a folder. You heard? Jordan nodded.

She smiled. You're graduating. He waited for relief to arrive. It did, but not alone. He thought of Angela ironing his only suit, Rachel packing meals he forgot to eat.

Walter sitting beneath the yellow lights at Ruth's kitchen telling him what strength was for. For nearly four years, Jordan had measured time by assignments, bus schedules, tuition deadlines, and how many semesters remained. Now Crownbridge could no longer take the finish line from him. He sat down, covered his face with both hands. Professor Hayes gave him the silence he needed.

When Jordan looked up, his eyes were wet. My mother is going to cry. Professor Hayes smiled. Probably she'll deny it. Definitely.

His phone buzzed again. This time it was his future employer. The engineering firm confirmed receipt of his clearance. His position remained available. No delay, no penalty, nothing lost.

Jordan read the message twice, then leaned back and released a breath that felt as though he had been holding it for weeks. He was safe. That should have been the end. By 6 that evening, Ruth's kitchen had turned his small victory into a celebration. Despite Jordan repeatedly asking everyone not to, Rachel made meatloaf.

Angela brought a pie. Walter claimed he had contributed by staying out of the kitchen. Coach Brooks arrived after practice. Emily came carrying her laptop, but for once kept it closed. Warm yellow light filled the windows.

Outside, the Route 417 bus groaned at the curb before pulling into the dark. Inside, cutlery clinkedked against plates. Jordan sat in the booth with his mother beside him. Angela held the graduation clearance email on Jordan's phone. She read it once, then again.

Jordan watched her eyes shine. "You're crying. I have allergies in November. Eat your dinner." Rachel called from behind the counter.

He's right, Angela. Rachel, mind your restaurant. I am. You're in it. Laughter moved through the room.
