Jordan looked at it. Is this payment for the refrigerator? No. For wrestling? No. For saving Walter? No. She folded her arms.

It's because you look terrible. Jordan laughed. Even Angela laughed. For a few minutes, the room felt safe. Then Jordan's phone chimed.

The sound was small. It changed everything. Jordan looked down. Crownbridge University, Office of Student Conduct. His stomach tightened.

He opened the message. Notice of formal review. The university had received video evidence concerning the incident outside West Haven Student Commons. Jordan's eyes moved faster. Alleged physical assault.

Three students. Temporary review of campus conduct. Attached video. 14 seconds. Jordan stopped breathing for a moment.

Jordan. Angela's voice. He tapped the attachment. The video began. Tyler's punch was gone.

The scattered papers were gone. Chase grabbing from behind was gone. The warning was gone. The clip started with Tyler already going down. Then Chase, then Logan on one knee.

Jordan looked enormous in the center of the frame. Controlled, powerful, terrifying. If you didn't know what came before. The final image froze on Tyler, shouting for Jordan to let him go. No beginning, only the ending.

Jordan watched it twice. Then he set the phone on the table. Walter read his face. What did they do? Jordan turned the screen around.

Coach Brooks watched the clip. His expression hardened. Rachel whispered. That's not what happened. No, Jordan said.

Angela looked at her son. What does the university say? Jordan stared at the words above the video. Formal review. Assault.

Three students. He had spent an entire week making sure people could not rewrite his anger. He had documented everything. He had walked away. He had warned them.

He had used less force than he was capable of using. None of that was visible in 14 seconds. Jordan picked up the scratched brass key beside his plate. Walter watched his fingers close around it. The room that had just celebrated Jordan's restraint suddenly felt very small because his hidden strength was no longer a secret, and someone had already figured out how to turn that strength against him.

By Monday morning, Crownbridge had already changed the language. Jordan was no longer the student who had been cornered outside West Haven. He was the respondent. The email arrived at 7:04 a.m. before the route. 417 bus had even reached the university gates.

Temporary hold on graduation clearance. Temporary hold on engineering internship certification. Mandatory conduct review. Jordan read the words twice as the bus moved through the gray Richmond morning. His reflection floated over the rain streaked window.
