One student stepped backward into the building. The crowd that had watched the entire thing suddenly seemed uncertain about its own memory. Jordan felt cold despite the warm light spilling from inside. Then a voice came from the edge of the terrace. He didn't assault anybody.

Everyone turned. Coach Raymond Brooks stood beneath the rain darkened awning. He had apparently entered from the athletic side of campus. His gaze moved from Tyler to Chase to Logan, then to Jordan. Coach Brooks saw the stance immediately, hands open, weight centered, breathing controlled.

He also saw Tyler's confusion, Chase's humiliation, Logan rubbing his wrist. Brooks almost smiled. Instead, he walked forward. "How much did you use?" Jordan understood the question.

"Almost nothing." Tyler stared at them. What does that mean? Brooks looked at Jordan again. For years, he had wondered whether the instincts would fade.

They had not, still undefeated, he said quietly. The words changed the air. Chase's face tightened. "What?" Coach Brooks looked toward him.

"You boys really didn't know." Jordan lowered his head slightly. Coach Brooks stopped. He understood. Jordan did not want a speech.

He did not want applause. He did not want his past turned into another show. So Brooks said nothing more. But the damage to Chase's certainty was already done. Tyler looked at Jordan's broad frame differently now.

Not as weight, as structure. Logan looked from Jordan to Coach Brooks. Undefeated in what? Jordan ignored him. He bent down, picked up one of his wet engineering sheets, then another.

This time, someone moved. Emily. She crossed the terrace and picked up the recommendation letter from the rain. The paper was soaked along one edge. She held it out.

Jordan. He looked at her. I'm sorry. He took the page. For the paper.

Emily's eyes filled with shame. She knew what he meant. No. Jordan held her gaze for a second, then nodded. Campus security finally appeared through the doors. Two officers approached, both adults, both cautious after seeing the crowd.

One asked, "Who was involved?" Chase answered immediately. Him. He pointed at Jordan. Tyler nodded.

Logan lifted his phone. We have video. Jordan looked at the device, then at the witnesses, then down at the scratched brass key that had fallen from his pocket during the struggle. It lay on the wet stone beside one of his calculations. Coach Brooks saw it, too.

His expression changed again. Jordan bent and picked it up. The old brass felt cold in his palm. 10 seconds had changed everything. The men who called him an easy target were no longer laughing.

But as Logan held up his phone and Richard Witmore stepped beside his son, Jordan understood something far more dangerous. Winning those 10 seconds did not mean he had won the story. Because the people with the most power were already deciding which 10 seconds everyone else would be allowed to see. Campus security separated everyone before the rain had stopped. Jordan sat beneath the bright lights of a conference room just inside West Haven Student Commons, his damp engineering papers stacked crookedly beside him.
