Calvin hadn't known she'd arranged her own ride. He supposed he'd half expected to be asked again and was realizing now that it meant something different that she hadn't needed to ask. She'd arrived needing someone to help her take the first step. She was leaving on her own two feet. Sophie put her suitcase in the trunk.

She came back to the sidewalk. She and Robert stood facing each other for a moment. Calvin watched from his porch. He didn't move. He didn't look away either.

Robert spoke first from across the yard. Calvin couldn't hear the words, but he saw Robert reach out and put both hands on Sophie's shoulders. Not a hug yet. Just that. Just holding her by the shoulders and looking at her.

The way you look at something you almost lost and didn't. Sophie said something back. Robert pulled her in. He held on. Not briefly, not the polite embrace duration of a man who had always made hugs functional and short.

He held on with the grip of someone who had been practicing saying goodbye for 6 years and was choosing this time to feel the full cost of it instead of managing it down to something more comfortable. Sophie's head came down on his shoulder. They stayed like that. Calvin looked at his shoes. He gave them the moment.

When he looked up, Sophie was pulling back, saying something, and Robert was nodding and saying something back. She kissed his cheek. He touched her face briefly with one hand. She picked up her backpack. She turned toward the car and then she saw Calvin on the porch.

She crossed the yard. She stopped at the bottom of his porch steps. She looked up at him and for a moment, she didn't say anything. She just looked at him with those eyes that had been closed and defended. And slowly over these weeks opened the way a room opens when someone finally raises the blinds all the way.

You didn't have to come out, she said. I know, he said. She studied him. This is the part where you say something wise. I don't have anything wise, he said.

I just didn't want to not say goodbye. She held his gaze. Then she said, "Thank you for everything. For the drive, for the coffee conversations, for the cookout, for coming to the table that night, for sitting on the porch, for all of it. She paused.

You didn't have to do any of it. It wasn't your problem. You weren't a problem, he said. She looked at him for a moment. You know what's strange?

She said, "3 weeks ago, I got off a plane in Ohio for the first time in almost 7 years. I didn't know you. I didn't know what I was walking into. I didn't know if I could even stay one night. She stopped, swallowed.
