I didn't want you to stay for the wrong reasons. Calvin felt that move through him like something physical. He didn't want you to come home out of guilt. Calvin said. He wanted me to come home because I wanted to, she said, and instead I didn't come home at all.
She looked at Calvin with something raw and bone deep in her eyes. How do you misread someone you've known your whole life? How do you get it that wrong? Because you were both protecting each other, Calvin said. And neither of you told the other what you were doing.
She pressed her lips together hard. I yelled at him, she said, for about 4 minutes. I yelled at him for not telling me, for letting me leave thinking he didn't care, for being so so determined to be self-sufficient that he didn't notice he was disappearing from my life at the same time. "What did he say?" She looked at her hands.
He said you're right. A pause. That's all. Just you're right. And then he said he was sorry.
Robert said he was sorry out loud. Those words. She looked up. I've never heard him say that before. In my entire life, I have never heard Robert Hayes say those words directly to me.
Calvin sat with that for a moment. What did you do? He said, I didn't know what to do. So, I did nothing. I stood there and then I started crying, which I hate.
And I told him to stop looking at me while I was crying. And he turned his chair around and faced the wall. Her voice broke slightly on the last word, and she recovered fast. He faced the wall so I could cry without being watched. That's so him.
That is so exactly him. Calvin almost said something. Then didn't. He had to face the wall, she said softly, because that was the only way he knew to give me privacy. He's never learned how to hold space for someone's pain.
He's only ever learned how to remove himself from its line of fire. She shook her head and somehow that's the most tender thing he's ever done. They sat in silence for a full minute. Then she said, "You knew, didn't you?" About him working extra.
About the boat. Calvin shook his head. I didn't know. I just knew him. Meaning what?
Meaning that's who he is. He would absolutely do that. Work nights. Sell the boat. Never say a word.
Die before he let you feel obligated. Calvin leaned forward. Elbows on his knees. That's not a flaw, Sophie. That's just That's a man who doesn't know any other way to love.
