And we waited 3 hours for the tow truck and ate gas station, sandwiches, and he taught me how to play poker with a deck of cards he found in the glove compartment. She stopped. Her voice had done something at the end of that sentence. Gone soft in a way that surprised her. He could tell because she blinked twice fast.

I had forgotten that story, she said completely. And when he told it, I remembered everything. The sandwiches. The way the cards kept sticking together. Him laughing when I beat him the third time.

She pressed her lips together. He remembered every detail. He told it like it was last summer. Calvin said quietly. He remembers everything.

Sophie, I know that now. She looked toward the garage. The truck started. When it finally turned over, he just sat there with his hand on the steering wheel. Didn't say anything.

And then he said, "Your grandfather would have liked you. She let that land between them. That's the closest he's ever come to saying he's proud of me." Calvin let the silence hold for a moment. Then he said, "That's him saying everything.

I know." She said, "I'm learning to hear it." She looked at him with something that was close to relief, but also carried a warning in it. The look of someone who has allowed themselves to hope and hasn't decided yet whether that was wise. But Calvin, she said, "There's something else."

He waited. "There's something I found out. Something he didn't tell me. Something I had to piece together myself. She inhaled slowly, and I don't know what to do with it yet."

He looked at her. "What did you find?" She shook her head. Not yet. I need to think about how to say it right.

But stay close. Okay. I'm going to need someone to talk to who isn't him. He nodded. I'm not going anywhere.

She looked at him for a moment, then nodded once. The way someone nods when they're filing something away somewhere safe and went back inside. Robert was still standing near the porch. He had watched the whole exchange. "She okay?"

Calvin asked him. Robert looked toward the door she'd gone through. His expression was complex in the way. Only very old pain gets complex layered. Worn smooth in some places, still sharp in others.

She's better than okay. He said, "She's here." He said it like it was the most important fact in the world. Because for him, Calvin was starting to understand it was. The following Wednesday, Calvin came home from work to find Sophie sitting on his front steps, not next door, his steps.
