Calvin slowly moved and sat down on the couch across from him. Robert finally looked up. His eyes were dry, but his face had the undone quality of a man who'd been somewhere very difficult inside himself and hadn't quite made it all the way back. He held out the piece of paper. Calvin leaned forward and looked at it without touching it.

It was a recipe card written in the looping, slightly labored handwriting of a child, the kind that was neat because it was trying so hard to be. Daddy's birthday cake. Sophie Hayes, age 12. Calvin sat back. I forgot she wrote this, Robert said.

His voice was very low. I forgot I had it. And then I found it today and I couldn't, he stopped. He pressed his lips together. I couldn't put it down.

Sophie was standing in the doorway of the living room with her arms crossed tight across her chest. Not cold, holding herself together. "Show him the other thing," she said. Robert glanced at her. "Show him, Dad."

Robert reached down beside the armchair and picked up something. Calvin hadn't noticed a small photo album. The kind with the fabric cover. Cheap. The kind you get at a drugstore.

He held it out to Calvin. Calvin took it, opened the first page. It was Sophie. Age maybe seven or eight in a kitchen, flower on her face, grinning at the camera with the kind of joy that only exists when you're eight and covered in flower and someone you love is laughing behind the lens. He turned the page.

Sophie at maybe 10 at a little league game she wasn't playing. She was in the stands and she was watching something off camera with her whole face lit up. Someone must have caught her when she wasn't looking. The photo was slightly blurry at the edges. The kind of shot taken quickly before the moment passed.

Page after page, Robert had documented her whole childhood. Not formally, no studios, no pose shots, just moments, caught, preserved, put into a $3 photo album that had been sitting in a drawer in his garage for years. Calvin closed the album carefully and held it out to Sophie. She shook her head. He's had it for 20 years and never showed me, Sophie, Robert said.

I'm not angry, she said. And her voice was absolutely steady. I'm not I'm just trying to understand how someone can love this much and say this little. The room was very quiet. Robert looked down at the recipe card in his hands.

He looked at it for a long time. Then he said something that cost him Calvin could see it. The way it moved through the old man before it came out. I didn't know you needed to see it, Robert said. I thought I thought you knew.

Sophie uncrossed her arms. She crossed the room. She sat on the arm of his chair, which surprised Calvin because it was such a young thing to do the way a child sits when they're not quite ready to be all the way next to someone, but closer is necessary. How would I know? She said, "You never showed me."

Robert looked up at her. "I'm showing you now," he said. She looked at him for a long moment. Something in her face changed. The defenses didn't drop.
