“Not recently.”

“Good.”

Boring prevention again.

Before leaving, she walked into the science hall.

Dr. Harris had placed a photograph from her old fair inside a display case.

Not the fight.

Not the broken model.

A photograph taken earlier that morning showed Nia standing beside the complete solar system, smiling while a young student pointed at Pluto.

Caleb must have loved it.

Nia stared at the picture.

“That’s the one you kept?”

Harris stood behind her.

“I figured you had enough copies of the other part.”

Nia laughed.

He was right.

The internet preserved destruction.

The school preserved the project before destruction.

Both were true.

Only one showed who she had been before Claire touched anything.

Years later, Nia received an email from Claire.

They had not communicated since mediation.

Claire said she now worked in healthcare administration and had recently watched a supervisor question whether a Black employee had really created a presentation that impressed executives.

The supervisor asked three separate times who helped.

Claire said the scene made her remember the science fair.

She challenged the supervisor.

The employee had created the presentation herself.

Claire wrote that she finally understood how suspicion could feel neutral from inside the person expressing it.

Each question sounded reasonable individually.

Together they revealed whom the questioner expected to be capable.

She apologized again.

Nia read the email twice.

Then she replied.

Keep noticing the pattern before somebody has to prove themselves ten times.

Claire responded with one sentence.

I will.

They never became friends.

That was fine.

Dylan never contacted Nia.

That was also fine.

Not every story needed reunion.

Some people belonged to a chapter rather than an ending.

At thirty-one, Nia visited her parents and found the old solar-system model sitting on the basement shelf.

Caleb, now an adult, had secretly replaced Pluto’s handwritten sign with a printed plaque.

JUSTICE FOR PLUTO — STILL PENDING.

Nia laughed hard enough that Denise came downstairs.

“What?”

Nia pointed.

Denise shook her head.

“That boy has commitment.”

Nia picked up Saturn.

The ring leaned.

She left it.
