Teachers favored Nia.

Her father built the project.

Admissions wanted representation.

The story survived because evidence was never allowed to change the premise.

Nia asked about the fight.

Claire said Dylan had talked for weeks about getting Nia angry on camera.

She had initially treated it as a joke.

Then the no-contact order made her resentful.

The morning of the fair, Dylan suggested they confront Nia while teachers were distracted.

“Did you plan to break the model?”

Claire said she did not decide until she was standing beside it.

Nia believed that part.

“Did you plan to block me after?”

“No.”

“Did Dylan?”

Claire hesitated.

“I think he planned something.”

That answer angered Nia more than the others.

She asked whether Claire knew Dylan might become physical.

“I knew he kept talking about making you swing first.”

“And you still brought him.”

Claire looked down.

“Yes.”

Nia asked why Claire joined the physical attack.

Claire wiped her eyes.

“Because when Dylan hit you and you didn’t go down, everybody started yelling at him.”

Nia waited.

“And then you hit him back.”

“So you attacked me.”

“I thought I was helping him.”

Nia shook her head.

“You were helping the person who attacked me because he was your friend.”

Claire nodded.

That was the truth.

Loyalty without judgment.

The same mechanism that had kept people laughing at jokes they knew were wrong.

Nia accepted the apology.

Not friendship.

Not erasure.

She believed Claire understood more than before.

That was enough.

Before leaving, Nia said one final thing.

“You did not smash the wrong Black girl’s project.”

Claire looked at her.

“There is no right one.”

Claire nodded.

“If my model had been terrible, you still shouldn’t have touched it.”

“I know.”

“If I had failed physics.”

“I know.”

“If I couldn’t fight Dylan.”

Claire’s voice became quieter.
