James, when I left, the kitchen clock ticked. Somewhere outside, a car passed. James sat completely still and let those words reach him, which took a second because the mind has a way of stalling on information it is not prepared to receive. When you left, he said, "Yes, you were pregnant." "Yes, with my Yes."

Her voice didn't waver, but her hands folded in her lap, pressed against each other hard enough that her knuckles changed color. It was early. I had just found out. 3 weeks, maybe four. I didn't I hadn't told you yet.

James stood up. He didn't plan to. His body just made the decision. And he was standing moving toward the window standing with his back to her because he needed for just a moment to not be looked at. What happened?

He said it came out flat. Not a question, a command to continue. I lost it, she said about 3 weeks after I left. I was at my cousin's place in Greensboro. I hadn't told anyone.

Not my cousin, not my mother, not you. I hadn't told anyone because I was still trying to figure out what I was going to do. And then there was nothing left to figure out. He turned around. Sophie was sitting with her hands in her lap and her eyes fixed on a point somewhere around the middle of the floor and she was not crying.

He recognized the discipline of that had practiced it himself enough to know exactly what it cost. "And you didn't call me?" He said, "No, you found out you were pregnant with my child. You left. You lost the pregnancy and you didn't call me.

Know why? The word came out harder than he intended. She looked up. Because I had already made the choice to leave. And calling you to tell you I'd lost a pregnancy.

You didn't know about James. What would that have done? You would have come for me. You would have driven to Greensboro and sat with me and held me together. And then I would have come back.

And I couldn't come back. Why? He said again, "Same word, different weight this time." Sophia looked at him for a long moment. And then she said, "The thing that was clearly the actual center of all of it, the thing that all the other things had been built around to protect because I was terrified," she said, "of becoming the thing that held you back."

James stared at her. "You had Ava," she said. She was 3 years old. You were already doing the hardest thing I had ever watched a person do. Raising a child alone.
