Nia answered before her sister could. No. Charles frowned. This is because of what happened. You've made accusations against my son. Your son put his hand on me.

Charles glanced toward his attorneys. That's disputed. No, Mitchell said. It was recorded. Charles's jaw tightened.

For a moment, the room held the same old conflict in a different form. Nia's word against wealth, except now there was footage, messages, records, and an institution that had finally begun preserving what it once preferred not to see. The public board hearing was scheduled six days later. By then word had spread beyond Wellington. The hearing room filled early.

Adult students sat beside faculty and former students. Board members occupied a long raised table beneath the Wellington seal. Reporters waited along the sidewall. Nia entered carrying the same repaired canvas bag. Naomi walked beside her in the old black jacket.

No uniform. No medals. No attempt to look important. A few people recognized Naomi now. That bothered her.

Not the recognition itself. The timing. The same people who once looked through her now made room when she passed. Nia noticed too. She leaned closer.

You okay? Naomi gave a small nod. Just learning how fast hallways get wider when people know your resume. Nia almost smiled. They sat in the second row.

Across the room, Trevor arrived with Charles and an attorney. Ryan and Derek entered separately. Madison sat with counsel near the aisle. Ashley came alone. Dean Richard Sloan entered last.

He looked smaller without his office around him. Mitchell called the hearing to order. No theatrics followed. That made the evidence more powerful. First came the security footage.

The large screen showed Ryan provoking Nia. Derek blocking the exit. Madison recording. Trevor taking the folder. Trevor gripping Nia's wrist.

Naomi arriving. Three. Two. One. Her controlled intervention.

Then campus security moving immediately toward Naomi. The footage ended. Nobody spoke. Next came Madison's original recordings. Not the eight second post.

The full files. They captured laughter before the confrontation. Ryan's deliberate provocation. Madison asking whether she'd got it. The parts that had been removed were more damaging than the part that remained.

Then Ashley testified. Her voice shook at first. I knew it was wrong. She looked toward Nia. I kept telling myself I wasn't the one doing it.

The room stayed quiet. But I stood there. She swallowed. And eventually standing there became helping. Nia looked at her.

Ashley did not ask forgiveness. That mattered. She simply told the truth. Then came the administrative records. An independent investigator summarized complaint after complaint from adult former students.

Different years. Different incidents. Repeated phrases. Insufficient corroboration. Peer conflict.

Informal resolution. No further action. Then the emails appeared. A message from Sloan regarding avoiding unnecessary escalation involving a priority donor family. Another warned that disciplinary action connected to the Hale name could complicate expansion commitments.

A third referred to resolving complaints at the lowest administrative level possible. Sloan's attorney objected to the interpretation. The investigator continued. No single sentence said bury the complaints. That was not how systems protected themselves.
