Calm when Sloan minimized it. Calm when Ryan shoved her. Calm even now. And still he needed to tell her to remain calm. Nia looked down at the video still on his desk.

What are you going to do? Sloan folded his hands. Pending review, you are being temporarily suspended from campus activities and classes. The room seemed to narrow. I'm suspended?

Temporarily. What about Ryan? We are reviewing everyone involved. Is he suspended? Sloan did not answer.

Nia understood. What about Trevor? Nia. Madison? We're done here.

Nia's eyes burned. She refused to let him see tears. You have my complaint. Yes. You have Trevor's message.

Yes. You have photographs of my neighborhood. We're reviewing those. You have a bruise. Sloan looked away.

And now you have eight seconds of video. She gave a small, bitter laugh. That was enough. Nia, this isn't personal. She picked up her canvas bag.

That may be the worst part. An hour later, Nia walked through Wellington carrying a cardboard box, her notebook, two textbooks, a coffee mug, a folder of printed assignments, her lunch container. Nothing dramatic. Nothing that should have felt humiliating. But it did.

Because everyone knew. Students watched from the glass walled lounge. Someone whispered near the elevators. The same adults who had seen Trevor's group corner her earlier stood in the hallway. Nobody spoke.

Not one. Nia walked past the brass donor wall, past hail meridian construction, past the limestone entrance, out into cold afternoon light. At the bus stop, she sat with the cardboard box on her knees. For the first time all day, she cried. Quietly.

No sobbing. No seeing. Just tears she wiped away before the bus arrived. Across town, Naomi woke from three hours of sleep to 23 notifications. She sat upright on the edge of the bed.

The viral video loaded. Once. Twice. Three times. Naomi watched Ryan move backward.

Nia's hand. The caption. Then she watched again. This time without looking at Nia. She looked at the background.

Glass walls. Reflections. Movement behind the camera. Naomi leaned closer. In a reflective panel across the athletic center, a small red indicator light glowed near the ceiling.

She paused the video. Zoomed. A fixed security camera pointed directly toward the confrontation. Naomi's exhaustion vanished. Madison had recorded eight seconds, but Wellington had recorded everything.

Naomi called Nia. No answer. She called again. Then a third time. Finally, Nia picked up.

Naomi. Her voice was small. Naomi closed her eyes for one second. Then she looked again at the frozen image of the security camera. Nia, listen to me.

What? Don't delete anything. I haven't. Don't answer Trevor. Don't answer Madison.

Don't answer anybody. Nia was silent. Naomi's voice became steady. There was another camera. What?

In the athletic center. Fixed security. Nia breathed in sharply. Naomi zoomed closer. The red light was unmistakable.

They didn't record the whole story. A beat. But Wellington did. For the first time since Sloan had told her to leave campus, Nia felt something move beneath the devastation. Not relief.
