"It wasn't quite an accusation, and it wasn't quite a compliment. It was the observation of a man recalibrating." "I've tended sick and hurt people for most of my adult life," Clara said, ringing the cloth. "Families on the frontier don't always have a doctor within reach. You learn what you can.

He was quiet. She needs to be watched tonight. Clara said the knock on her head. She shouldn't sleep too deep for the first few hours. Someone needs to check on her every hour.

I'll do it. He said, I'll take the second half of the night, Clara said. You won't be any good to this ranch on no sleep. He looked at her. She looked back at him the same direct way she'd looked at him on the platform.

Not challenging him, not soft pedaling, just present, just honest. Something moved through his expression that he didn't entirely succeed in hiding. "All right," he said. That was the first time Ethan Callahan agreed to anything Clara Whitfield suggested. "It wouldn't be the last."

She sat with Lily through the small hours of the morning in the chair pulled up to the bedside, speaking quietly when the child stirred. At some point around 2:00 in the morning, Lily opened her eyes fully and looked at Clara in the lamplight. "You stayed," she said. "I told you I would," Clara said. Lily looked at her for a long moment.

Her eyes were more awake than they'd been all evening, and there was something in them. Some careful, watchful thing that was older than 6 years had any right to be. Mrs. Harmon used to say things, too, Lily said before she went back to town. I know.

The others said things, too. I know that, too. Lily looked at the ceiling, but then they left. "Yes." So, why should I believe you?

Clara was quiet for a moment. The lamp flickered. Outside, the wind moved through the grass on the ridge. I don't know that you should, Clara said. Not yet.

I think trust is something you earn over time, and I haven't earned much of yours yet. That's fair. All I can tell you is that right now tonight I'm here and I'm not going anywhere. Lily was quiet. Okay, she said finally.

Just that just okay. She closed her eyes again and Clara sat with her and the house was quiet around them. And somewhere down the hall, Ethan Callahan lay in his bed and listened to the silence and thought about a woman he had told in front of the whole town that she was the wrong one. He thought about how she had looked at him when he said it. I thought about her with his daughter tonight, the steadiness of her, the knowledge in her hands, the way she'd spoken to Lily, like the child was a full person deserving of explanation and honesty.

He thought about what it felt like to not be alone in the worst moments. He had forgotten what that felt like. He lay there for a long time in the dark. And for the first time in nearly 2 years, something in his chest that had been locked down and set in iron began not to open. Not yet.
