"Mr. Harden," she said, "you're making a mistake." He said. You and Callahan both the hearing the witnesses. He shook his head just slightly.

The way a man shakes his head at something he's already counted as decided. Mrs. Caldwell is a patient woman and a long-memoried one. You might win the hearing. You won't win what comes after.

Clara looked at him. Her heart was going fast. She was careful not to let it show. "Is that a threat, Mr. Harden?"

She said. Her voice was level. "It's an observation," he said. I'm a man who makes observations. "Then observe this," Clara said, I have been told to leave threatened, slandered, had my name dragged through every conversation in this town, and had a fire set on property I call home, and I am still here.

She held his gaze. Whatever Mrs. Caldwell has patience for, I have more. Whatever she can wait out, I can wait out longer. And when that hearing happens, everything she has done in this valley for 5 years will be on record in a court of law with witnesses.

She paused. Tell her that as an observation, Harden looked at her for a long flat moment. Then he turned his horse and rode back the way he'd come without a word. Clara watched him go. Then she turned and walked the last quarter mile to the ranch, and she was through the gate and had the door in her hand before she let herself shake just briefly.

Just for a moment. The way you shake when the thing you were afraid of passes close and keeps going. Just her hands. Just once. Then she went inside.

She didn't tell Ethan about Harden until that evening after the children were in bed. She told it plainly everything that was said and watched him go still in the way he went still when something frightened him in a direction he couldn't put his body between. "He came to you on the road," Ethan said. "Alone." "Yes."

That man has the things he's done. I know what he's done, she said. And I told him what I needed to tell him. It needed to be said. "You should have told me first."

You should have, Ethan. She looked at him. "I handled it." "You're not." He stopped.
