The morning had begun quietly for Elena Ward, a 17-year-old girl known in her school for being reserved, soft-spoken, and almost invisible in every hallway she walked through. Her long, jet-black hair reaching down to her waist was the only thing that ever drew attention, but Elena never showed it off. It was her shield, her curtain, the one thing that made her feel safe. Most people at Lincoln High had no idea who she truly was. They didn’t know her father was the most feared and respected man in the region, District Attorney Jonathan Ward, a name that made criminals tremble and police chiefs stand straighter.

Elena kept her truth locked away because she wanted to live quietly, without titles, without power, without the weight of someone else’s reputation shaping how people looked at her. But bullies never needed a reason. All they needed was a target. And Elena, with her silence and her softness, was the perfect one. The day began normally until fourth period.

The sound of sneakers, slamming lockers, and laughter filled the corridor like a storm. Elena stood at her locker, adjusting the thick chemistry textbook pressing against her ribs. Her breathing was slow, measured. She kept her eyes lowered, avoiding attention as she always did, but a sudden shove slammed her forward, her hands hitting the locker door with a painful metallic echo. Behind her, the laughter exploded.

“Careful, Rapunzel.” “Oh my God, she almost face-planted.” “Someone record that.” Elena recognized the voices instantly: Cassie Rock, Jenna Mills, and Tara Lynch, the trio of girls who ruled the hallways like queens and hyenas at the same time. Cassie, the ringleader, had bright red hair and a temper to match.

They were daughters of businessmen, board members, donors, people who believed their money could protect them from anything. Elena backed away slightly, hugging her books, wishing she could disappear. She whispered, “Please, I just need to get to class.” “Oh, listen to her,” Jenna mocked, pitching her voice into a baby tone. “She’s going to cry.”

Cassie stepped closer, lifting a strand of Elena’s hair between two fingers, twirling it like she owned it. “Why do you hide behind this?” Cassie asked with a poisonous smile. “Are you ugly under there or just boring?” Elena’s voice barely left her throat. “Please let go.”

Cassie tugged the strand sharply, and Elena winced. “Make me.” Students nearby pretended not to notice. Some watched, some filmed discreetly, but no one acted. Nobody wanted to get on Cassie’s bad side.

Nobody wanted to stand against the girls who had wealth backing them and a reputation for being untouchable. The bell rang, offering Elena a momentary escape. Cassie let the strand of hair slip from her hand but leaned in close to whisper, “This isn’t over.” Elena rushed away, her heart pounding. But her day was about to get much, much worse.

Lunch period should have been safe, crowded, noisy, easy to disappear into. But safety was a privilege Elena no longer had. Cassie and her two partners in crime had been whispering all morning, glancing at Elena with predatory intention. She tried to avoid them, choosing an empty table at the back of the cafeteria, but Jenna spotted her. “There she is.”

Three pairs of eyes locked on her. Elena froze, her throat tightening. “Not again, please.” But Cassie smiled, the type of smile a lion gives before pouncing. “We need a word,” she said sweetly.
