Nadia turned just as Kelsey reached toward her. She blocked the incoming arm and pushed Kelsey away.
Kelsey came again. Nadia shifted sideways and used her momentum to send her stumbling between two desks.
Brielle tried to reenter at the same moment. Nadia turned, blocked her, and shoved her backward.
The room erupted. Chairs moved, notebooks fell, and students shouted for everyone to stop.
Neither bully landed the decisive attack they seemed to expect. Nadia had enough training to avoid standing still and enough sense not to pursue either girl when space opened.
Finally Brielle stumbled into a desk and went down beside it. Kelsey lost her balance seconds later after another rush and fell near the opposite aisle.
Nadia stopped immediately. She remained standing between them, soaked from head to boots.
Her hands lowered. She did not touch either girl again.
For almost two seconds, nobody said anything. Nadia looked around the classroom as water continued dripping from the ends of her braids.
Then she picked up her wet notebook. She walked toward the doorway.
Mr. Elliot Harper, the teacher assigned to the class, returned from the copy room at that exact moment. He saw two students on the floor, overturned chairs, and Nadia standing near the door.
“What happened?” he demanded. Everyone began talking simultaneously.
Brielle pointed at Nadia. “She attacked us.”
Nadia closed her eyes. Of course that would be the first version.
Harper told everyone to stay where they were. Nadia said she wanted Dean Cole.
Within ten minutes, administrators had three student videos. Unfortunately, two began after the water fell and one began only when Brielle stood up.
Brielle repeated that Nadia became violent after a harmless prank. Kelsey said she had tried to separate them.
Then Headmaster Reeves remembered the hallway security cameras. He requested footage from before first period.
That was where this story began on Monday morning.
The video showed Brielle and Kelsey carrying the bucket into Room 306. It showed Kelsey climbing onto the chair.
It showed Brielle testing the line. It showed both girls laughing while they positioned their phones.
Another camera showed them leaving athletics storage with the bucket the previous afternoon. The prank had not been spontaneous.
School technology staff also requested the relevant messages after Kelsey’s parents allowed administrators to review her school-synced account. The phrase diversity baptism appeared exactly where Nadia suspected it would.
Other messages were worse. Brielle called Nadia “Crestwell’s charity mascot,” even though the school was Westbridge and the comment had apparently been copied from another joke she had seen online.
She wrote that Nadia “acted rich for somebody on a scholarship.” Kelsey replied that “girls like her always pretend they belong until somebody reminds them who pays.”
Investigators asked what “girls like her” meant. Kelsey cried and said she had not thought about it.
