Then Georgetown accepted her. The letter arrived on a Thursday evening while Renee was cooking pasta and Darius was trying to fix a dishwasher he had no business fixing. Nadia screamed from the dining room.

Her parents ran in expecting an emergency. Instead, they found her crying over a laptop. Darius forgot about the dishwasher completely and flooded part of the kitchen twenty minutes later.

Westbridge posted college acceptances on a senior board. Brielle saw Nadia’s name beneath Georgetown on Monday morning. She said nothing while teachers were nearby.

Later, she told Kelsey that schools were desperate for “stories like hers.” Lucas heard.

He asked whether Georgetown had personally called Brielle to explain its admissions decision. Brielle told him he was obsessed with defending Nadia.

Lucas answered, “No, you’re obsessed with explaining her.” Several students laughed.

That humiliation changed Brielle more than another administrative warning would have. She had once controlled the social meaning of her jokes because people automatically laughed with her. Now they were beginning to recognize the repetition before Nadia even reacted. Brielle was becoming the person who looked strange.

Kelsey remained loyal. She told Brielle everyone had become scared because Nadia could accuse them of racism. The two began discussing ways to “prove” Nadia could not take a joke. Investigators later recovered those messages.

Their first idea involved hiding Nadia’s backpack. Kelsey rejected it because cameras covered the hallways. Another idea involved pouring something onto her chair, but Brielle worried a teacher might sit there first. Eventually they began talking about the classroom door in AP Social Policy, where students entered from a short hallway without a camera inside the room.

One message read, Imagine she walks in and gets baptized before first period. Kelsey replied with a photograph of a blue plastic bucket from the athletics storage room. Brielle responded with laughing emojis.

Nothing happened immediately. The idea sat in the chat for almost two weeks. Then Nadia published an opinion column criticizing how elite schools sometimes celebrated diversity numerically while leaving minority students to manage exclusion socially.

She did not mention Brielle. She did not mention Kelsey. She discussed research, student interviews, and anonymous examples from multiple schools.

Brielle treated the article as an attack anyway. She told Kelsey Nadia had built her entire identity around making Westbridge look racist. Kelsey replied that Friday would be a good day to remind her she was not untouchable.

Thursday afternoon, Kelsey stole the blue bucket from equipment storage. Brielle filled it the next morning using a custodial sink before most students arrived. Security footage later showed them entering Room 306 at 7:12.

Kelsey stood on a chair and balanced the bucket on a narrow ledge above the door. Brielle tied a nearly invisible piece of fishing line from the bucket handle to the interior doorstop so opening the door beyond a certain angle would pull it forward. They tested the mechanism with an empty trash bin beneath it.

Then they reset everything. Kelsey positioned herself near the back of the room. Brielle sat at the front desk where she would have a clear view.

Students gradually arrived. Several noticed the bucket but assumed it was part of some planned joke unrelated to them. One student asked Brielle what they were doing.

“Senior prank,” she said. “Don’t ruin it.”

At 8:16, Nadia reached Room 306. She had spent the morning finishing an article and was three minutes later than usual. Her black leather jacket was zipped halfway over the white shirt beneath it, and she carried a notebook under one arm.

She opened the door. The fishing line tightened.

The blue bucket tipped. Nearly three gallons of cold water crashed over Nadia’s head and shoulders.

She stopped in the doorway. Water streamed down her braids, jacket, face, white shirt, jeans, and boots.

The bucket bounced against the top of the door before landing behind her. Several students gasped. Brielle laughed.

Kelsey was already filming. A few students laughed from surprise before the situation registered.

Nadia closed her eyes. Water dripped from her eyelashes and chin. For several seconds she did nothing.

Then she looked at Brielle. The red-haired girl leaned over her desk smiling.
