“I know,” she said. “That’s not an excuse.”

Then Nadia asked about the bucket. Brielle admitted the prank was designed to make Nadia lose control.

“You wanted me angry?” Nadia asked.

“Yes.” Brielle’s eyes filled.

“Why?”

“Because everybody had started saying I was obsessed with you.”

“So you wanted me to look like the problem.” Brielle nodded.

The fight followed the same logic. When Nadia began walking toward the administration office, Brielle realized the prank would produce another disciplinary case rather than social humiliation.

She blocked the door. When students stopped laughing, she felt embarrassed.

Then she swung. There was no better explanation.

Nadia accepted the apology without offering friendship. She told Brielle that regret mattered only if it changed the way she treated the next person.

Before leaving, Nadia said one more thing. “You didn’t bully the wrong Black girl.”

Brielle looked at her. Nadia continued.

“There was no right one.” Brielle nodded slowly.

Graduation arrived in June. Westbridge arranged rows of white chairs across the main lawn while families filled temporary bleachers beneath enormous maple trees.

Renee cried before seniors entered. Darius insisted allergies were responsible for his own watery eyes.

Nadia accused both parents of becoming embarrassing in old age. They reminded her they were paying for dinner.

Brielle crossed the stage before Nadia. Her parents applauded.

Nobody booed. Nothing dramatic happened.

Nadia was relieved. Consequences had already happened.

When her own name was announced, Nadia crossed in a navy gown with a gold Merit Fellows cord around her shoulders. She had briefly considered leaving the cord at home.

Then she realized she would be allowing Brielle’s interpretation of the program to outlive the truth. Nadia had earned it.

She took her diploma. Headmaster Reeves shook her hand.

The audience applauded. She returned to her seat.

No bucket fell. No one raised a phone.
