“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
“We already did this with the bracelet.”
Lauren said she was not accusing Naomi.
Emily replied, “You’re trying to make somebody else do it.”
Kara’s phone rang from inside her own duffel bag before the argument went further.
Coach Ross heard about the exchange anyway.
Lauren lost cheer captaincy for the remainder of the year.
That consequence broke whatever restraint remained.
She did not scream at the coach.
She did not confront Naomi directly.
Instead, she created a new private chat without Emily.
Members included Lauren, Kara, Madison, and one junior named Sophie Bell.
Madison saved everything.
At first the chat consisted mostly of anger.
She got what she wanted.
Everyone thinks I’m racist.
I can’t even ask a question anymore.
Then the language changed.
She walks around like she knows everybody is scared to touch her.
Kara replied, Because they are.
Lauren wrote, One day she’s going to show everybody that attitude for real.
Sophie added a laughing emoji.
Madison did not respond.
The next message made her uncomfortable.
If somebody got in her face without teachers around, she’d lose it.
Kara wrote, Probably.
Lauren replied, Exactly.
Madison screenshot the conversation.
She still did not report it.
That decision would bother her later.
Senior spring moved forward.
Prom invitations appeared.
College deposits were due.
Naomi chose Howard after visiting with Erica.
Derrick immediately bought a Howard cap and wore it so often Naomi accused him of attending vicariously.
Life outside Lauren still existed.
That mattered.
Naomi spent afternoons editing the final newspaper issue. She helped Ariana choose a prom dress.
She argued with her younger brother Miles about borrowing headphones.
She attended judo once a week because Terrence said senior stress was turning her shoulders into concrete.
Normal life prevented bullying from becoming her only story.
Still, her body reacted whenever she saw a red cheer uniform.
She hated that.
The final confrontation happened on a Tuesday afternoon three weeks before graduation.
Naomi had stayed after school for a Senior Advisory Council meeting.
The meeting ended early.
She walked toward the gym hallway because the nearest restroom was the turquoise-tiled one cheerleaders often used.
No game was scheduled.
No practice had officially begun.
Naomi entered alone.
She leaned against the sink counter and checked a text from Erica asking whether she needed a ride.
She replied that she would take the late bus.
The restroom door opened.
Lauren walked in wearing her red cheer uniform.
White trim.
White athletic shoes.
Large white bow.
Naomi looked up immediately.
The uniform surprised her because Lauren was no longer captain and no game was scheduled until Friday.
Behind her entered Kara, not in uniform but wearing a pale pink warm-up set.
Naomi slipped the phone into one hand.
