He thought about what Richard Hail had taken from him, his career, his reputation, his faith in the fairness of the world, and he thought about what the man was trying to do now, hunting down a woman who had dared to glimpse the truth. "Yeah," Aaron said finally, his hand finding Mia and holding tight. "She's going to be okay. We're going to help her."

Elena stared at him. "Do you mean that? After everything, you don't even know me." Aaron nodded slowly.

"Three years ago, I tried to fight him. I went to lawyers, reporters, anyone who would listen. No one believed me. I didn't have proof." He paused.

"But you do." Elena's hand moved to her pocket where she had hidden a small USB drive. "I have files, documents, maybe recordings. I haven't had a chance to look at everything." Aaron crossed the room and knelt in front of her, his eyes level with hers.

"Then we look together. And when we find what we need, we make sure the whole world knows what Richard Hail really is." Elena had known she was asking this man to risk everything. He had already lost so much because of Richard Hail. He had rebuilt his life from the wreckage, had created something small but real with his daughter.

And now she was asking him to put all of that in danger again. "You don't have to do this," she said. "I can find another way. I can disappear. Start over somewhere else."

Aaron shook his head. "And he wins again. He keeps destroying lives and no one ever stops him." He glanced toward the window.

"I know a lawyer, Margaret Chen. Her office is across town. If we can get there, she might help us figure out what to do with those files." Mia looked up from where she had been watching. "Are we going on an adventure, Daddy?"

Aaron managed a small smile. "Something like that, sweetheart." They took the back stairs, moving quickly through the service entrance that opened onto the alley. Aaron carried Mia on his hip, her small arms wrapped around his neck. Elena followed close behind her, heart hammering against her ribs.

The alley was narrow and shadowed, lined with dumpsters and fire escapes. Aaron led them through a maze of back streets until they reached his truck parked three blocks away. It was an old Ford, rust spreading across the wheel wells, the engine coughing to life with reluctant loyalty. Mia settled between them as Aaron pulled onto the main road. "Miss Elena," Mia said.

"Are you scared?" Elena looked at the little girl. "A little," she admitted. Mia nodded seriously. "Daddy says it's okay to be scared as long as you keep being brave."

The law office of Margaret Chen occupied a small suite on the fourth floor of an aging professional building downtown. Aaron had not been here in nearly 3 years, not since Margaret had reluctantly told him that there was nothing more she could do, that without evidence, his case was impossible. The memory of that conversation still stung. He had sat in her cramped office, watching hope drain away like water through a broken pipe.

Now he was back, and this time he had Elena, and Elena had files. But when they reached the fourth floor, Aaron's stomach dropped. The door to Margaret's office was sealed with yellow tape. A notice from the city was posted on the glass.

Something about lease violations and immediate closure. The windows were dark. The interior had been stripped bare. "No," Aaron whispered. He pressed his hand against the glass as if he could will the office back into existence.

Behind him, Elena made a small sound of distress. "They got to her. Richard's people. They knew we might come here."

Before he could respond, a shadow fell across them. Through the window at the end of the hallway, Elena could see a black sedan pulling up to the curb outside. The back door opened and Richard Hail himself stepped out onto the sidewalk. He was exactly as Aaron remembered, tall and impeccably dressed, his silver hair swept back from a face that radiated confidence and control. He looked up at the fourth floor window directly at them and smiled.

"Well," Richard said as they emerged from the building's front entrance, his voice carrying with perfect clarity. "This is an unexpected reunion." Aaron positioned himself in front of Elena and Mia, his body a barrier between them and the man who had ruined his life. "Stay away from us."

Richard tilted his head, amused. "Aaron Miller, I heard you'd fallen quite far. Plumbing now, isn't it? Fitting work for a man who spent his career dealing with other people's waste." He turned his attention to Elena.

"And my darling fiancée. Did you really think running to the very man I destroyed would somehow save you?" Elena stepped forward, placing herself beside Aaron rather than behind him. "I know what you did. I have the files."

Richard's smile did not waver. "Files can be corrupted. Witnesses can be discredited. Come home, Elena. We'll forget this little rebellion ever happened."

Elena's hand found Aaron's arm. "No, I'm never coming back. And the whole world is going to know exactly what kind of man you really are." Richard's expression flickered, the first crack in his composure. "Then you'll regret it, both of you."

Elena pulled out her phone with trembling hands. She navigated to the audio file she had saved the night before. "The night of the engagement party, I wasn't just in your study. I was in the conference room next door."

"The walls are thin, Richard. I heard everything." She pressed play. The recording was not perfect, but the voices were clear enough.

Richard's voice instructing his team to purge the backup logs. Another voice asking about the engineer who would take the blame. Richard's response, cold and certain: "Miller is nobody. His career, his reputation, none of it matters. What matters is protecting this company."

Aaron listened with his fists clenched. Three years of doubt evaporated in 40 seconds. Then Elena said something that made his heart stop. "The backup logs you deleted, they're not actually gone, are they? You just moved them to a secondary server, the one with the security vulnerability that Aaron flagged two months before you fired him."
