"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to involve you in this. I'll find somewhere else." She moved toward the door, but Aaron's hand shot out, not grabbing her, just gesturing toward the window. "Wait."

His voice had changed. The anger replaced by something sharper, more urgent. Through the thin curtains, Elena could see what he saw. A black SUV parked directly in front of the building.

The windows were tinted, so dark they looked like holes cut in the morning light. The engine was running, a soft rumble that seemed to vibrate through the walls. She recognized the vehicle immediately. Richard's security team. "They found me."

The words came out hollow, stripped of everything but resignation. Aaron looked at her, looked at the SUV, looked back at her. His face was unreadable, but she could see the calculation happening behind his eyes. He was weighing the risks, measuring the costs. She would not blame him if he chose to hand her over.

She was nothing to him, less than nothing. She was a complication he did not need connected to the man who had already destroyed his life once. "Daddy," Mia said from the hallway, her voice small and uncertain. "Who's in that car? Are they bad guys?"

Aaron moved quickly, pulling the curtains closed with a sharp motion, checking the lock on the front door, his body moving with the practiced efficiency of someone who had learned to prepare for the worst. His hands were steady, but Elena could see the tension in his shoulders, the way his jaw was set tight enough to ache. He was afraid. Of course, he was afraid.

Richard Hail had already taken everything from him once. What would the man do if he discovered Aaron harboring his runaway bride? "You can't go out there," Aaron said finally. It was not a question, not an offer, just a statement of fact delivered in a flat tone that left no room for argument.

"They're watching the entrance. The back, too, probably. If you step outside, they'll have you before you reach the corner." The three of them sat in the small living room, the curtains drawn tight against the gray morning light. Mia had retreated to the couch with a coloring book, but her eyes kept drifting toward Elena filled with that uncomplicated curiosity that children possess.

Elena had changed into some of Aaron's old clothes that he had silently offered: a flannel shirt that hung past her thighs, sweatpants rolled three times at the ankles. She looked absurd. She felt almost human for the first time in months. "Tell me everything," Aaron said. He sat across from her in a worn armchair, his posture rigid, his hands folded in his lap as if he did not trust what they might do if left free.

"Tell me why you're running. Tell me what you saw." Elena took a breath. Where to begin? How do you explain the slow accumulation of wrongness, the way suspicion builds like sediment until one day you realize you are drowning in it?

"The engagement party was last night," she said, "at Richard's estate. Three hundred guests, all of them important, all of them watching me smile and nod and play the part of the happy bride to be. I excused myself to get some air, and I ended up in his study. There were documents on his desk, internal memos, financial records, things he never would have left out if he'd known I was coming. I didn't mean to look, but I saw my name."

Aaron leaned forward slightly. His expression had not changed, but Elena could feel his attention sharpen. "Your name was in his business files?" Elena nodded. "There was a prenuptial agreement, not the one I'd already signed, a different one hidden in a folder marked Contingency."

"It said that if I ever tried to leave him, if I ever spoke to anyone about his business practices, everything I owned would become his property." She paused. "But that wasn't the worst part. There were other documents, records of lawsuits quietly settled, employees silenced with money or threats, and there was a folder about a system failure at Hail Systems 3 years ago, about an engineer who was blamed for it. About how the evidence against him had been fabricated."

Aaron went very still. His hand, she noticed, had begun to tremble. "The engineer's name was in those files," Elena said softly. "Aaron Miller. They destroyed you to protect themselves."

Mia looked up from her coloring book, her small voice cutting through the heavy silence. "Daddy, the lady looks like the runaway bride on TV. Is she running away from a wedding, too?" Aaron's voice came out rough, scraped raw by 3 years of suppressed rage.

"He framed me. Richard Hail personally ordered the destruction of my career, my reputation, my entire life." It was not a question. Elena nodded.

"From what I could piece together, there was a real problem with the system. A vulnerability that Richard's team had known about for months, but refused to fix because it was too expensive. When the system failed, they needed someone to take the fall. Someone expendable. They altered the logs, planted the evidence, built a case that no one would question."

She met his eyes. "I am so sorry. What they did to you was monstrous." Aaron stood abruptly, walked to the window, pressed his forehead against the cool glass.

Outside, the SUV had not moved. Its dark windows reflected nothing but the gray sky. Three years. Three years of wondering if he had somehow made a mistake.

If there was something he had missed, if the destruction of his life was somehow his own fault. And now this woman was telling him that he had been right all along. That he had been betrayed by people who did not even see him as human. Daddy.

Mia's voice cut through his thoughts. She had appeared beside him, her small hand reaching for his. "The lady looks... uh, is she going to be okay?" Aaron looked down at his daughter at her open face, her uncomplicated trust. Then he looked at Elena, who sat frozen on the couch, her borrowed clothes swallowing her frame, her eyes filled with a fear he recognized all too well.
