And I said nothing because you were sister and I was 23 years old and I didn't know what I know now. The silence after that was long and absolute. Walter had gone still. Eleanor looked like she was somewhere else entirely. Vanessa was looking at Clare the way someone looks when a card they've been holding for years has just been turned face up.

You knew, Vanessa said very quietly. I knew from the phone call, Clare said. 2 months out, you told me. Do you remember that? You called me to talk about the seating chart, and in the middle of it, you told me you weren't sure you were going through with it.

And then you hung up and I sat there for 20 minutes with your fiance's number in my phone and I didn't call him because I thought I actually believe that you would do the right thing and tell him yourself. Clare, you didn't tell him. You let him walk away and then you told the family it was mutual and I let you do that too because I was still protecting you. I was always protecting you. Her voice dropped.

And I am done. Walter said this is not Dad. Clare turned to her father. I love you, but I need you to not talk right now. Walter closed his mouth.

The fact that he did it, that he actually went quiet, said something about where his daughter had arrived. Vanessa said, "Clare, are you in love with him?" Marcus stayed where he was. He didn't move. He didn't look at Clare.

He let her have the question and the answer both. Clare stood in that marina lot in the flat gray afternoon light. And she looked at her sister and she said, "I don't know what I am yet. I know that I trust him. I know that I feel seen by him in a way that I have never felt in that house."

She gestured back toward the house on the ridge. Very slightly with one hand. I know that last night was the first night in years where I didn't feel like I was managing what other people thought of me. I know that when I walked out of that party last night. He was the person I was walking toward.

She paused. What any of that becomes, I don't know yet. But I'm not going to lie about it. Vanessa absorbed that. And then she said something that no one in that parking lot expected.

I kept you away from him on purpose. The world rearranged itself. Clare went very still. What? The first time I brought him home, Vanessa said, and her voice had lost the precision now.

It was something raarer and harder to listen to. You were sitting at that table and you were asking him questions. The real kind, the kind that go somewhere, and he was answering you the same way. She stopped. And I knew right then.

I knew that whatever it was between you and him, it was realer than whatever was between him and me. She looked at her hands for a moment. So, I moved faster. I pushed the relationship forward faster than it should have gone. I made it an engagement before it had earned that.
