It's what I do. Then you already know I'm not a threat." Knowing someone isn't a threat and trusting them are two different things. He nodded. Fair.

I'm not trying to be difficult. I know. I'm just She pressed her lips together, looked out the window. When she looked back, something had shifted. Something real.

I've had a really, really bad 6 months. And I've gotten very used to people not meaning what they say. I meant what I said. Marcus told her, "I don't want anything from you. I'm not expecting anything from you."

I pulled over because I know what it looks like when someone is out there by themselves and they shouldn't be and I wasn't going to drive past it. Clare was quiet for a long moment. You know what that looks like? She asked carefully. From personal experience.

He met her eyes. Yeah, he said. From personal experience. She didn't ask what he meant. Not yet.

But something shifted between them in that 24-hour diner at exit 47. something quiet and tentative and real, like a door opening, just enough to let in a sliver of light. The Comfort Inn was booked. All three rooms with availability earlier that evening had been taken a family reunion, the front desk clerk explained with the cheerful helplessness of someone whose shift ends in 40 minutes. The next closest hotel with availability was 23 mi in the wrong direction. Clare stood in the parking lot of the Comfort Inn at 12:45 in the morning and stared at her dead phone.

Marcus stood a few feet away with his hands in his jacket pockets, saying nothing. "Okay," she said after a moment to no one in particular. "Okay, my place is 4 miles from here," Marcus said. She looked at him sharply. "Guest room," he said immediately.

"Clean sheets. My daughter's home, which means my neighbor is also home because she doesn't leave until I get there. I live on a cul-de-sac. Two doors down is a retired couple. They know my truck by sound.

He paused. I'm not telling you all that to convince you. I'm telling you so. You have the information you need to make whatever decision you need to make. Clare stared at him.

You do that a lot. She said, "Do what? Lay out all the information and then step back and let the other person decide. It's the only way to make a real offer, he said. Anything else is just pressure with a bow on it.

For a moment, she just stood there in the parking lot, the orange glow of the Comfort Inn sign washing over her face. And Marcus saw it the exhaustion. Not just from tonight, from longer than tonight. The bone deep weight of someone who had been carrying something heavy for a very long time and had finally in this moment run out of road. "Okay," she said quietly.
