Something quieter and just as real. For the first time since Ephraim died, she had walked through a night of fear without walking through it alone. A father of the fatherless and a judge of the widows is God in his holy habitation. She thought later, remembering the psalm her mother used to read her as a girl. God who sets the lonely in families, who sustains the fatherless and the widow, she had spent 11 months wondering whether God still saw her address.

That night, for the first time, she believed he did. Weeks passed. The ranch settled into a rhythm none of them had expected, but all of them, in their own quiet ways, had come to need. Hollis laughed again. Actually laughed, the kind that catches a boy by surprise.

Nell filled a notebook with observations she still wasn't ready to share. Tobin could saddle a horse nearly as well as a hired hand twice his age. Elsie asked fewer piercing questions, mostly because she'd stopped needing answers to feel safe. And then word came that the small country school 2 mi east needed a teacher. Miriam had taught school for 2 years before she married Ephraim.

Back before four children and a decade of hard living had reshaped her life into something entirely different. She still had the skill. She still had the patience. When the school board offered her the position, a real salary, a modest cottage attached to the schoolhouse, honest independence, she took 3 days to decide. And on the third day, she said yes.

It was in every practical sense good news. She would no longer need anyone's charity and not even anyone's employment. She could stand entirely on her own. She packed the same worn bag she'd arrived with. Ephraim's Bible went in first, same as always.

Orson helped her carry them to the wagon without a word of complaint, though something in his chest felt very much like it was being carried away with them. "You're really going to let us leave?" Miriam asked him at the gate. "The same gate, the one that had opened for them all those months ago." "If I have to keep you dependent on me to make you stay," Orson said, and his voice was steady even though his eyes weren't.

Then I haven't learned anything about love. I asked God for a family, Miriam. Not prisoners. Miriam's hand tightened on the handle of her bag. "If I ever come back," she said slowly, choosing each word with the same care she'd chosen the very first word she'd ever spoken to him.
