He started to rise. But Hollis, 16 now taller than his mother, steady in a way that no longer came from forcing himself to grow up too fast, but from having actually grown, was already walking toward the gate. He reached it before his stepfather did. He lifted the latch himself. Come in, he said.

And the circle that had opened for Miriam and her children two years before opened again exactly the same way, for someone else who had needed it just as badly. God setth the solitary and families. Orson had read that verse alone at a table built for eight, with six empty chairs staring back at him, and 30 years of quiet loneliness pressing on his chest. He had asked that night whether the promise still had room in it for a man his age. He understood now that the answer God had given him was never simply here is a wife.

The answer had been larger and slower and far more patient than that. The answer was I'm going to teach you all over again what it means to belong to someone and then I'm going to use everything you have to teach that same lesson to somebody else. If you are watching this tonight, perhaps you know something of both Miriam and Orson. Perhaps you are Miriam. Capable, tired, afraid to need anyone again.

Because the last time you let yourself need someone, you lost them. Perhaps you have survived so much loss already that the thought of loving anything or anyone deeply enough to lose it again feels unbearable. Or perhaps you are Orson, a life full of rooms, full of chairs, full of things you built with your own two hands, and yet somehow no one left to come home to them. Perhaps your children live far away now. Perhaps the people you loved most have already gone on ahead of you.

Perhaps you've quietly decided that the family chapter of your life is closed and you've made peace, or something close enough to peace, with an empty table. We are not here to promise you that a stranger will appear at your gate tomorrow. Life doesn't always work that way. And it would be unkind to pretend otherwise. But we can tell you this.

Family was never only about marriage or blood or the particular shape your household happens to take right now. Family can be a grandchild's voice on the telephone. Family can be the person two pews over at church who eats dinner alone most nights. Family can be a neighbor who hasn't had a real conversation with another living soul in longer than they'd ever admit. Family can be the version of yourself that finally decides to open a gate you've kept latched for years.
