He'd heard her moving through the house at that hour and known the way a man who's lived alone long enough learns to know things that something was wrong. He brought water. He kept the fire fed through the night. He helped her change the cloths on Tobin's forehead hour after hour without once saying the words she was terrified to hear and terrified not to hear. He did not say he'll be fine.

He would not lie to her. Not even a comforting lie. Not even at 3:00 in the morning with her whole body trembling beside him. Somewhere near 2:00, Miriam broke. "I prayed like this for Ephraim," she said barely above a whisper. her hands still working the cloth.

Even as her voice cracked apart, I sat exactly like this. I said all the right words. I told God I trusted him. I told everyone I trusted him. And he died anyway.

Orson, he died anyway. Orson didn't reach for her. He simply stayed steady, present, the way he'd learned to be present for a scared animal. Not with promises, but with staying. "Then don't try to make tonight's prayer sound brave," he said quietly.

Miriam looked up at him, eyes raw. "What am I supposed to say?" "The truth." Her hand stilled over the boy's forehead. And then, for the first time in 11 months, she stopped performing faith and simply told God what was actually in her.

"Lord," she whispered. and it came out broken and small and more honest than every prayer she'd prayed since the funeral. I'm afraid that was all. No eloquence, no scripture recited from memory to prove her faithfulness. Just the truth, laid bare in a dark room beside a sick child. He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep, Orson thought, though he didn't say it.

He only stayed hour after hour until Tobin's fever finally broke sometime before dawn. The boy's breathing easing into something ordinary and blessedly unremarkable. By morning, Tobin was simply a tired 8-year-old who wanted breakfast. Nothing about the night had been miraculous in the way stories usually mean that word. No sudden healing, no dramatic sign, but something had shifted in Miriam anyway.
