Renee stared at her.
That one word explained almost everything.
Even after months of evidence, Patricia had mentally preserved Renee as the real homeowner and Marcus as somebody attached to her presence.
Husband was temporary.
Black man was suspicious.
Colonel was legitimate.
The officers began clearing from the property.
Before leaving, Miller gave Marcus and Renee an incident number.
Officer Price remained behind long enough to ask whether they wanted to make a report regarding Patricia grabbing Marcus’s shirt.
Marcus looked at Renee.
Then at Patricia.
“Yes.”
Patricia’s eyes widened.
“You cannot be serious.”
Marcus answered, “You put your hands on me after I told you twice not to.”
The report was taken.
Patricia walked home alone.
The patrol vehicles left one by one.
Hawthorne Court became quiet again.
Renee entered the house first.
Marcus followed.
They stood in the foyer without speaking.
Finally Renee said, “Are you okay?”
Marcus looked toward the door.
“No.”
That answer surprised him.
He had not been hurt.
Patricia’s grabbing barely qualified as physical pain.
Still, five police officers had stood outside his home because a neighbor who knew him decided his presence was suspicious.
He sat on the stairs.
“The worst part is I knew what was going to fix it.”
Renee sat beside him.
“What?”
“You.”
She looked down.
Marcus continued.
“The second that door opened and everybody saw your uniform, I knew nobody would ask another question.”
Renee closed her eyes.
He was right.
Her rank had ended an argument that Marcus’s identification, neighbors, key, and own word had not.
Neither of them found that comforting.
The doorbell footage downloaded automatically.
Renee watched it once.
Then again.
She saw Patricia touch Marcus.
Saw the officers move.
Saw herself emerge.
Saw Miller straighten.
The shift in body language was subtle but obvious.
Before Renee appeared, Marcus was the person being evaluated.
After she appeared, Patricia became the person being questioned.
No new evidence about Marcus had entered the scene.
Only visible authority.
