She ignored him.

“You’re the one making it racial.”

Marcus looked at her.

“I did not mention race until right now.”

“You always do this.”

“Do what?”

“Turn every question into an accusation.”

Marcus stepped backward toward the door.

“I am done talking to you.”

Patricia followed.

Marcus pointed toward the walkway.

“Get off my porch.”

She reached toward him.

At first she seemed to be pointing.

Then her hand caught the front of his shirt near the collar.

Marcus froze.

“Do not touch me.”

Patricia released him for a moment.

“You don’t intimidate me.”

Marcus looked down at her hand.

“I’m not trying to intimidate you.”

“Get off me.”

One officer told Patricia to step away.

She turned toward the police instead.

“See how aggressive he gets?”

Marcus stared in disbelief.

Patricia reached again.

Her hand caught fabric near his chest.

This time the doorbell camera captured everything clearly.

Marcus pulled backward.

“Stop touching me.”

The officers moved closer.

Then the front door opened.

Renee stepped outside in full Army dress uniform.

The polished shoes, dark jacket, ribbons, badges, and silver colonel insignia made the visual shift immediate.

She stopped when she saw the police.

Then Patricia.

Then Marcus.

“What is going on?”

Nobody answered.

Marcus pointed at Patricia.

“Apparently I’m burglarizing our house.”

Renee looked at Miller.

“Excuse me?”

Miller identified himself and explained that officers had responded to a burglary report.

Renee looked around.

“Burglary where?”

“This residence.”

She stared.

Then at Marcus.

Then back at the sergeant.

“That is my husband.”

Patricia stopped moving.
