Had crafted separate realities for her husband and her lover. Had managed contradictions that should have been impossible. Had played us against each other without either of us knowing there was a game. The manipulation was breathtaking in its scope. The calculated nature of it.

The way she'd made me doubt myself while making Marcus feel like a hero. The way she'd kept us both believing our own versions of reality while she lived in a third space altogether. My phone buzzed. A text from Rachel. Can we talk?

I need to get some things from the house this weekend. I looked at her message, thought about Marcus's statement, thought about the lies I layered on lies, layered on more lies, and I realized this wasn't over. Not even close. Because there was one more truth I hadn't shared yet. One more piece of evidence that would change everything.

The biggest revelation of all, the thing I'd been saving for exactly the right moment. And that moment, I decided, was now. I texted back, "Come by Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Bring boxes for your things. " And Rachel, bring your birth control pills. The three dots appeared immediately, then stopped, then appeared again.

Finally, why? You'll see. I typed Saturday at 10:00. Don't be late. I sent it, turned off my phone, and sat in the darkness of my office with Marcus's confession and my whiskey and the knowledge that in two days everything would change again.

Because Rachel didn't know that I knew. Didn't know that while she'd been lying to me about her affair, she'd been lying about something else, too. Something bigger. Something that would reframe everything that had happened and everything that was about to happen. Saturday at 10:00 a.m., the final truth would come out.

And then finally, this would really be over. I raised my glass to the empty room, to the ghost of my marriage, to the man I'd been before all of this started. Phase two, I said to no one. Complete. Then I drank and waited for Saturday and the reckoning that was coming.

Saturday morning arrived wrapped in fog, the kind of gray November weather that makes everything look muted and undefined. I woke at 6:00, made coffee I couldn't taste, and spent 4 hours preparing the house for what was coming. Not cleaning, though I did that too, but arranging, setting the stage, creating the precise environment for truth to land with maximum impact. The dining room table, seen of so many previous confrontations, held a single manila envelope. Nothing else.
