Several ranches are marked for future purchase, including Cole's property. The plan includes a date for beginning construction. Cole understands they have very little time. They free the cattle and collect the documents.

But as they leave, a rider spots them. Gunshots crack through the valley. Cole and Mara race away with the herd while several men pursue them. Mara leads the cattle through a narrow canyon while Cole takes a different route to draw the riders away.

Cole eventually circles back and meets Mara near the ranch. They now have enough evidence to expose the theft, but Cole knows Wade will not simply surrender. Mara suggests making copies of every important document and sending them to different people. If Wade destroys one set, others will survive.

Cole agrees. Before they begin, he finds one final note hidden inside his father's journal. It mentions another record hidden somewhere beyond the valley. The note says that this final record contains the names of the men who ordered the original betrayal.

Mara recognizes the location described. It lies near an abandoned mission trail. She warns Cole that her family has avoided that place for decades. Cole asks why.

Mara looks toward the distant hills and quietly tells him that the truth waiting there may explain why so many people were willing to kill to keep it hidden. Cole and Mara leave the ranch before sunrise, carrying the journals, maps, and copied records in separate saddlebags. They know Wade Harlon and the sheriff will be searching for them, so they avoid the main road and follow an old trail toward the abandoned mission. Cole keeps thinking about his father's final note.

If another record really exists, it could reveal who ordered the original betrayal and explain why the secret has been protected for so many years. After two days of careful travel, they reach the mission trail. The place is almost completely forgotten. Broken stone walls rise from the weeds, and the remains of an old building stand beneath the trees.

Mara recognizes the location from stories told by her elders. She remembers that families once gathered there when the valley was threatened, but she had never known exactly what they were protecting. Mara studies the ground around the ruins and notices a flat stone covered with an unusual symbol. The same mark appears on the leather pouch, the hidden chamber, and the records beneath Cole's ranch.

Together, they move the stone and discover a small metal box buried underneath. Cole uses the key recovered from the thieves to open it. Inside are old letters, signed agreements, hand-drawn maps, and a thick ledger wrapped in cloth. The documents are remarkably well preserved.

Cole immediately understands that this is the missing evidence his father wrote about. Mara carefully reads the oldest agreement and recognizes the names of her ancestors. The document confirms that several families had legally agreed to protect the hidden spring and the surrounding land. Their rights were not temporary.
