As they disappear into the tunnel, Wade shouts that Cole has no idea what he has uncovered. Cole looks at Mara. For the first time, he realizes Wade is afraid of the truth, and that fear may be the biggest clue of all. Cole and Mara emerge from the hidden tunnel just before dawn, far from the ranch and out of sight of Wade's men.
Cole carries the journals and land records against his chest, knowing that these papers may be the only evidence capable of exposing what happened years ago. Mara tells him they cannot return to town yet. If Wade knows about the chamber, he will expect Cole to seek help there. They need to understand the enemy before making their next move.
They ride toward an abandoned lookout point above the valley. From the ridge, they can see Cole's ranch in the distance. Several riders are already moving around the property. Cole recognizes Wade Harlon among them, but another familiar figure catches his attention.
The town sheriff is standing beside Wade. Cole realizes why he never received help when his cattle disappeared. The sheriff may be part of the same operation. Mara opens one of the journals and helps Cole examine his father's notes.
The entries reveal that the men behind the cattle theft are not simply trying to steal Cole's herd. They want to force him away from his ranch long enough to search beneath the property without interference. One entry explains that the hidden spring beneath the valley is extremely valuable. A group of investors plans to develop the surrounding land, but controlling the spring would give them power over every ranch and settlement nearby.
Cole's ranch sits directly above the most important section of the underground water system. The cattle were chosen carefully because losing them would make Cole appear unable to maintain his ranch. If he failed financially, Wade could claim that Cole had abandoned the property and challenge his ownership. Cole is furious when he realizes how carefully everything was planned.
Mara points to another page. Her expression changes when she sees a familiar family name. Her ancestors were among the people who originally protected the spring. The records show that their agreement was never legally canceled.
Someone simply removed the evidence from the public records. Cole asks how they can prove the documents are real. Mara explains that they need witnesses and additional evidence. If they return with only the old papers, Wade could claim they were forged.
They need proof connecting the modern cattle theft to the older land scheme. Cole remembers the abandoned stockyard where his cattle were being held. They decide to return there secretly. Using a narrow trail through the hills, they reach the stockyard before sunset.
Most of the stolen cattle are still inside. Cole notices crates stacked near the fence. Inside are drilling tools, ropes, maps, and equipment designed to reach underground water. Mara finds a folded document showing a plan for the valley.
