The boards have been removed and placed beside the fence. The thieves clearly searched the area but failed to find what they wanted. Mara studies the stones around the well and notices that several are arranged differently. Cole removes the loose stones and discovers a flat metal plate buried beneath them.

At its center is a small keyhole. Cole immediately remembers the metal key taken from his father's leather pouch. He realizes the pouch and the hidden entrance are connected. With a tool from the barn, Cole works the metal plate loose.

Beneath it is a narrow staircase descending into complete darkness. Cold air rises from below. Mara warns him that they should leave before the thieves return, but Cole refuses. If his father hid something beneath the ranch, he needs to know what it is before anyone else finds it.

They light a lantern and descend. The staircase leads into a stone tunnel that appears much older than the ranch itself. The walls are reinforced with carefully placed stones, suggesting that someone spent years constructing the passage. At the bottom, Cole discovers a hidden chamber.

Inside are wooden boxes, rolled maps, old journals, metal containers, and stacks of documents protected from moisture. There is no gold and no obvious treasure. Cole opens the first journal and recognizes his father's handwriting. The entries reveal that the hidden chamber was built to protect records concerning land and water rights.

Years earlier, several families had relied on a secret spring beneath the valley. The land surrounding the spring had been protected through a private agreement that included Cole's father and several Apache families. The documents reveal that powerful ranch owners later attempted to erase the agreement. They created false records, pressured officials, and tried to force families from the region.

Mara finds documents containing the names of her ancestors. She realizes that her family had been part of the original agreement and that the records could prove their rights had been deliberately hidden. Cole continues reading until he finds a letter written shortly before his father's death. The letter explains why he kept the truth hidden from Cole.

He believed the people searching for the chamber would eventually return, and he wanted his son to remain unaware so he would be safe. Suddenly, footsteps echo from above. Someone has entered the well. Cole extinguishes the lantern.

A man's voice calls his name from the darkness. Cole recognizes it immediately. It is Wade Harlon. Wade says he knows Cole is inside the chamber and demands that he surrender the records.

Cole remains silent. Mara points toward a second passage behind a false wall. Cole opens it and discovers another tunnel leading toward the canyon. Before escaping, Cole grabs the most important journals and documents.
