Silence swept across Briarwood Lane.

Ruth stared at Elijah.

Several deputies turned toward one another.

Holloway actually laughed once, as if the word had to be a mistake. “Colonel?”

The major lowered his hand.

“Colonel Elijah Nathaniel Reed, retired.”

Holloway looked at Elijah. “You never said—”

“I shouldn't have needed to.”

The woman in the civilian suit introduced herself as Deputy Inspector Claire Donovan from the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General. She did not explain Elijah's missions, list his awards, or transform the street into some grand ceremony. Instead, she opened a folder and spoke in the measured voice of someone accustomed to correcting situations created by other people's mistakes.

“Colonel Reed's military and post-service records include restricted material that your department accessed without full context,” she said. “Those records do not connect him to the missing communications equipment.”

Holloway looked toward the cameras.

Donovan continued.

“Federal investigators have also determined that portions of the warehouse surveillance archive were deliberately removed after the theft. Restored footage and access logs identify employees of Meridian Response Group as persons of interest.”

A murmur spread through the crowd.

Evan Brooks closed his eyes briefly.

Holloway said, “That doesn't prove Reed wasn't involved.”

Donovan turned toward him.

“His location during the relevant period has now been independently verified through federal systems your department did not have access to.”

That ended the argument.

Elijah had not been near the warehouse.

He could not have been.

Then Donovan delivered the part Holloway feared most.

“Federal investigators are reviewing communications between Meridian Response Group personnel and members of the Cedar Valley Sheriff's Department concerning both the theft investigation and the decision to focus investigative activity on Colonel Reed.”

Every television camera swung toward Holloway.
