“You've been hiding quite a history,” Holloway said.

“No,” Elijah replied. “I've been respecting one.”

Holloway pushed the folder toward him. “Explain these.”

“I can't.”

“Convenient.”

Elijah leaned back. “Some of those records are still restricted.”

Holloway smiled. “Then maybe you're counting on secrecy to protect you.”

Elijah studied him. “Sheriff, secrecy and guilt are not the same thing. You know that, or you should.”

When the interview ended, a young deputy named Caleb Morris followed Elijah into the hallway. “Mr. Reed,” he whispered. Elijah turned.

Caleb glanced toward the interview room. “I've seen the warehouse reports. Some of the timestamps don't match what they're saying publicly.”

Elijah watched him for a moment. “Why are you telling me?”

“Because something feels wrong.”

Elijah nodded once. “Then don't ignore that feeling just because someone outranks you.”

That afternoon the first real break reached the public. An anonymous source delivered the missing seventeen minutes of warehouse footage to a Richmond television station. The recording showed a Meridian Response Group truck entering a restricted service lane during the period Holloway's department claimed the cameras had failed.

Elijah never appeared in the footage.

By evening, the question on local news had changed completely. Instead of asking why Elijah Reed was being investigated, reporters were asking why the sheriff's office had continued targeting him after evidence pointed toward a politically connected contractor. Holloway watched the coverage from his office with the volume muted.

His phone rang repeatedly.

He answered none of the calls.

The pressure should have forced him to slow down. Instead, it made him reckless.

Holloway announced the next morning that Elijah would be detained for additional questioning while investigators examined “new information related to national security concerns.” The statement sounded official enough to frighten people who did not know what it meant. Behind closed doors, however, even members of his command staff objected.

Evan Brooks confronted him directly. “We have no basis for fifty officers, no evidence he's armed, and no evidence he's dangerous.”

Holloway stared at him. “I'm not losing control of this case.”

“You already lost control.”

That sentence ended their conversation.
