She thinks for just a moment of the badge her father wore, of what he used to say about people who finally face themselves. Even the hardest truth spoken plainly can be its own kind of mercy. Grant sits down hard, head in his hands, sobbing openly, all his easy confidence gone. Larkin steps forward gently, placing a hand on his shoulder. Let's go, son.

Grant stands slowly, legs unsteady, and lets himself be led toward the door. He doesn't look back at his father. Not once. Addie steps to the front once more, waiting for the room to settle. I owe this town an explanation, too.

She says about something I said at the diner. I told five young men to drop my sister or get five coffins ready. Some of you thought that was a threat against their lives. It wasn't. I've spent my whole career learning that real justice doesn't come from fear.

It comes from evidence, from patience, from people finally telling the truth out loud. I used dramatic words that day because I was angry and scared for my sister. But the promise underneath them was always about paperwork, not violence. She looks toward Grant, Chase, Dean, Cole, and finally Ryan, still standing near the front. Five coffins, she says, was never about caskets.

It was about closed cases. Five names, five files, five sets of consequences waiting to be opened. Tonight, some of those files closed the way they should have from the start. Others, she says, glancing at Ryan, found a different ending because someone chose courage instead of silence. That's the real lesson here, if there is one.

Consequences aren't the same as revenge, and courage doesn't always arrive on time. It still counts when it shows up. The room absorbs this slowly. Murmurss of understanding rippling through the crowd. Dorothy, in the second row, wipes her eyes with a worn handkerchief.

The old man beside his wife nods slowly as if something long suspected has finally been confirmed. Larkin turns to the room. Given tonight's evidence, formal charges will follow for Everett and Grant Whitmore. Chase Bennett and Dean Marsh will be questioned regarding their knowledge and involvement. Given his cooperation tonight, I'll be recommending leniency for Ryan Foster.

Choosing to come forward, even late counts for something in my book. Ryan exhales, shoulders sagging with something between relief and exhaustion. Douglas Pratt's resignation leaves the council needing a quick decision on the actual agenda item. The remaining members confer briefly, heads bent together near the front table. "Carol Hutchkins leans over to the councilman beside her, voice low but firm.

" "We should have caught this years ago, " she mutters. "All of us should have, " he nods grimly, glancing back at the crowd, still murmuring behind them. Finally, Carol stands to speak, smoothing her jacket with both hands first. Given everything we've just heard, she says, "I move to renew Rosie's lease immediately on different terms. Terms that protect this diner permanently, regardless of who owns the land.
