I made sure to keep proof even while I stayed quiet. I told myself that was enough. Keeping proof instead of speaking up, it wasn't enough, but it's here now and it's real. Douglas Pratt's face has gone the color of old paper. Larkin steps forward, taking the documents carefully, flipping through the first few pages.

His expression hardens with everyone he reads. He pauses on one page longer than the rest, jaw tight. This deed, he says slowly, shows the original owner of record. He looks up, meeting Josie's eyes across the room. Walter Mallister.

The room goes silent again. A different kind of silence this time. The land under three blocks of Main Street, including this very diner, was his. Filed and altered within a month of his death, Larkin says, signed over to Whitmore Construction for a fraction of its worth. Rosie sits down hard, hand over her mouth, understanding hitting her all at once.

The ground beneath her mother's diner had never really belonged to the Whitmores at all. Everett Whitmore, Larkin says, voice grim but steady. I'm going to need you to come with me. You as well, Grant. There are some serious questions we need answered tonight.

Everett stands frozen for a moment, calculating the way he always does, but there's nothing left to calculate. The room has already decided what it believes. Douglas Pratt clears his throat, standing shakily. I have something to say as well. Everett pressured me to move up this hearing.

Threatened to call in old favors. I let him because I was scared of what he'd do if I didn't. I'm sorry, Rosie. I'm sorry to this whole council. I should have said no.

He sets his gavel down on the table, hands trembling. I resign, effective tonight. The room sits in stunned heavy silence, absorbing everything unfolding in front of them. Grant, still standing near his seat, looks smaller than anyone has ever seen him. The easy grin is gone completely, replaced by something raw and unguarded.

For the first time in his life, every eye in the room is on him, and none of them are laughing at his jokes this time. His eyes find Josie across the room, desperate, pleading, ashamed all at once. He thinks briefly of the coffee cup he tipped over weeks ago. "How small that moment seems now compared to everything it started. "I didn't mean for it to go this far, " he says, voice breaking completely.

Tears spill down his face in front of the whole town, in front of everyone. His father doesn't move to comfort him. Doesn't even look his way. That absence says more than any words could have. Please, he says, looking at Josie.

Please don't look at me like that. Josie holds his gaze a moment longer. Steady, not cruel, simply honest. I'm not looking at you with anything but the truth, she says quietly. What you do with that is up to you now.
