Maya did not answer. Denise crossed the room. She stopped beside the dean of student affairs. Her voice was low. She could have heard him at any point.
The dean looked at her. Denise continued. She didn't. Grant stepped forward. This reception is over for her.
Maya looked at him. Grant's polished public voice had disappeared. Security. Two campus security officers near the entrance began moving toward them. Rachel stepped beside Maya.
So did Denise. Maya remained where she was. Evan's confidence began returning. The system was moving again toward Maya, just as it had before. Then one of the security officers looked up.
At the ceiling, a black dome camera pointed directly at the space where Evan had grabbed Maya. Another camera covered the opposite angle. The officer touched the radio at his shoulder. Before anybody makes a statement, he said, "We need to preserve the footage." Evan stopped talking.
Grant turned toward him. For the first time all evening, father and son looked afraid of the same thing. Maya followed their eyes to the camera above them. A small red light blinked steadily behind the dark glass. This room had been silent, but it had not been blind.
Within 20 minutes, the donor hall had emptied. The white flowers were still on the tables. Half full glasses still caught the chandelier light. A server quietly collected abandoned plates while campus security separated Maya, Evan, Lauren, Rachel, and the witnesses who had been closest to the confrontation. The glamour drained out of the room quickly.
Grant Bradford stood near the entrance, speaking in a low voice to a university administrator. Evan sat in a chair with his jacket off and anger replacing whatever embarrassment he had felt on the floor. Maya stood beside Rachel. Her hands had finally started to shake. Rachel noticed.
You okay? Maya looked down at them. Now I am. That was always how it happened. The danger passed.
Then the body caught up across the room. Evan pointed toward Maya. I want this documented as an assault. The security officer taking notes looked up. You grabbed her wrist.
She threw me. We'll review the footage. Evan's jaw tightened. My father wants counsel present. Heard that.
Absolutely. Maya looked at the camera above them. The red light kept blinking. For once, she did not need anyone to believe the calmness in her voice. The room had recorded what happened.
At 9:06 the next morning, Hawthorne formally opened an incident review. Because Evan had alleged assault, university policy required the donor hall footage to be preserved before the systems normal retention cycle could overwrite anything. That should have ended the question quickly. Instead, it opened another door. The investigator assigned to the case, a 47-year-old compliance officer named Karen Mitchell, reviewed the donor hall footage twice.
First from the ceiling camera near the entrance. Then, from the opposite corner, the recordings matched. Lauren approached. Evan blocked Maya. Maya attempted to leave.
Evan grabbed her. Maya warned him. He shoved her. He grabbed again. Maya used one controlled movement to put him down, then released him immediately.
