Professor Walker saw it. Nobody else seemed to. Denise had spent enough years around trained athletes to recognize what happened next. Maya's shoulders loosened instead of tightening. Her weight settled evenly through her hips.

Her right hand opened beside the tray. Not fear, preparation. Lauren had no idea. If Maya moved now, Denise thought those scissors would never reach her hair. Maya didn't move.

The blades closed. Snip. Several inches of Maya's braid dropped onto the white tabletop. The sound was almost nothing. The silence afterward was enormous.

Lauren stared at what she had done as if she had expected more resistance. Evan's mouth curved into a half smile. Kyle kept filming. A few feet away. Rachel Morgan had risen halfway from her chair.

Lauren, what the hell? Too late. A shortened section of Maya's braid rested beside her lunch. Nobody laughed now. Maya looked at it for one second.

Two. Something small struck the floor beneath the table. Maya heard it immediately. She bent down. Lauren took a cautious step backward.

Maya reached beneath the chair and picked up a frayed black bracelet. A scratched bronze disc hung from the cord no larger than a quarter. Maya rubbed her thumb across it once. The disc turned toward the overhead light. Zero.

Denise saw the numbers. So did Kyle's camera. Evan glanced at them and frowned. What is that supposed to mean? Maya didn't answer.

Her breathing remained slow, but inside her something had opened. Not anger alone, something older, heavier. For an instant, the dining hall disappeared. There was another floor beneath her feet. Another kind of light.

A voice telling her to breathe. A body falling. People rushing forward. Then Maya was back at Hawthorne. Fluorescent lights.

Cold lunch. A piece of her hair on a table. Nearly 200 people watching. She curled her fingers around the bracelet. Lauren was beginning to look uncomfortable now.

That seemed to bother her more than anger would have. Well, Lauren said, Maya stood. Evan straightened. Kyle's phone followed her. Maya was not especially tall, and nothing about her thrift store jacket or work shirt made her look intimidating.

But Denise saw Evan shift backward anyway, half a step. Instinct, Maya looked at Lauren. Exactly 2 seconds. There was no threat in her face. That was what made Lauren's smile disappear.

Maya picked up the severed piece of braid and placed it carefully on her tray. Then she slipped the bracelet around her wrist. Disappeared against the inside of her arm. She lifted her backpack. Rachel moved toward her.

Maya, I'm okay. It was the first thing Maya had said since the scissors closed. Her voice was steady. She carried her tray toward the return station. Nobody stopped her.

Nobody apologized. Nobody asked Lauren to leave. The students who had watched lowered their eyes as Maya passed. Some looked embarrassed. Some stared at their phones.
