The bullies huddled together, trembling. Donovan looked down at his daughter once more. Her breaths were shallow. Her face burned red and wet with painful tears. His jaw clenched.

“This ends today,” he said quietly. Only Nyla heard him. Only she needed to. He straightened and faced the bullies again, his voice calm and deadly. “Go stand where I can see you.”

No shouting. No threats. Just pure command. Troy obeyed without resistance. His bravado had evaporated completely.

From that moment on, the game shifted forever. As Donovan strode toward the market to pull its surveillance footage, the agents closed in on Troy, setting the stage for the next revelation hidden inside the cameras. Inside Ramon’s Market, the air felt drastically different from the chaos outside. The sliding doors closed behind Donovan, muting the distant noise of the crowd and Troy’s panicked breathing.

The store smelled of detergent, old wood, and warm bread, but none of that softened Donovan’s expression. The owner, Mr. Ramon, stood nervously near the counter, wiping his hands on his apron. His eyes darted between Donovan’s cold stare and the row of security monitors mounted on the wall. “Commander Carter, sir,” he stammered. “I didn’t know it was your daughter out there. I’m so sorry. I’ll help however I can.”

Donovan nodded once. “I need all your footage, inside, outside, every camera.” “Yes, of course. Right away,” Ramon said, hurrying behind the counter. Officer Ramos entered seconds later, sweat on his brow from the tense scene outside. “Commander, I’ve secured the area. Federal agents are controlling the perimeter.”

“Good,” Donovan replied, not taking his eyes off the monitors. “We’re about to confirm intent.” Ramos stiffened. “Intent for a hate crime?” Donovan’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t answer. He didn’t have to.

Ramon tapped a few keys and pulled up the first recording, the store’s outside camera from ten minutes earlier. The footage was clear, high-definition, showing the sidewalk exactly as it was before the incident. Donovan leaned closer. There was Troy walking with Kyle and Mason, laughing loudly, shoving each other, and looking around for someone to bother.

Nothing unusual yet. But then Troy reached inside his jacket. Ramos squinted. “Is that—?” Donovan’s voice dropped into a deadly whisper. “Rewind that. Slow it down. Zoom in.”

Ramon did exactly as instructed. The screen replayed the moment in crisp slow motion. Troy’s hand slid into his jacket pocket, his lip curled into a mischievous smirk. He pulled out the pepper-spray canister. He twirled it in his fingers like a toy.

Then he tucked it back carefully and deliberately. Ramos inhaled sharply. “Jesus. He had it ready before she even showed up.” Donovan’s eyes darkened into something far more dangerous than anger. “He didn’t react to a threat. He prepared for an attack.”

Ramon switched to camera two, angled from the side of the awning. More footage. More proof. Troy spotted Nyla approaching. He grinned eagerly.

He elbowed Kyle and whispered something that made both boys laugh. Then Troy stepped directly into Nyla’s path. Ramos rubbed his temples. “This wasn’t a misunderstanding. He stalked her.” Donovan said nothing, but his silence was louder than a battlefield.
