Troy looked helplessly at Mason and Kyle, hoping for moral support. But both boys looked just as terrified. Meanwhile, federal agents stood ready behind Donovan, hands resting near their belts, not threatening, but unmistakably authoritative. Donovan continued.

“Under U.S. Federal Statute 18H901, I am activating emergency jurisdiction for racially motivated assault against a minor.” Troy blinked. “What does that even mean?” “It means,” Donovan said, “this is no longer a school incident, or a neighborhood incident, or a disciplinary issue.” He took one step closer. “It is a federal crime.”

Gasps rolled through the crowd like a wave hitting shore. Troy felt the world tilt. “No, no, no, no. You can’t do that. My dad—” “Your father,” Donovan interrupted, “has no authority here, and his influence will not protect you.” Reporters leaned in, capturing every syllable.

Microphones pointed forward like hunting dogs tracking blood. Donovan turned so the entire street could hear him. “You assaulted my daughter with a weapon. You targeted her unprovoked, and the cameras show you prepared that weapon before you even saw her. That is intent.” People erupted with cheers.

“That’s right!” “Lock him up!” “Finally, justice!” Ramos exhaled heavily, watching in awe. Donovan lifted a hand, signaling for silence again. As before, the crowd obeyed.

“Troy Maddox,” Donovan said, voice unwavering, “you are now under federal detention pending investigation into racially motivated assault, premeditated harm, and additional charges related to past incidents currently under review.” Troy shook his head violently. “This is crazy. You can’t do this. I’m a minor. You have to treat me differently.”

Donovan’s expression hardened. “The statute accounts for your age, and it still applies.” “But my dad knows the chief of police,” Troy shouted desperately. Ramos stepped forward with surprising firmness. “Not anymore, he doesn’t.” The crowd roared.

Donovan didn’t smile or gloat. He simply extended his hand toward his agents. “Take them.” Two agents moved forward. Troy panicked.

“Wait, no! I didn’t mean—it wasn’t—she—” His voice cracked into a strangled noise as an agent gently but firmly brought his hands behind his back. Kyle and Mason backed away instinctively, but two more agents were already behind them. “No running,” one agent said calmly. “You’re required to stay for questioning.”

Kyle whimpered. Mason trembled. Donovan looked at them with the same icy authority. “You are all under temporary federal custody until we complete evidence extraction and interview witnesses. Cooperate, and this will proceed professionally. Resist, and it will escalate.”

The reminder was unnecessary. None of them had the courage left to resist anything. As the agents secured them, the crowd erupted into claps and cheers. Parents raised their hands. Students filmed with wide eyes.

Justice, something many had never personally witnessed, was happening in real time. For the first time ever, Troy Maddox understood what fear actually felt like. Not fear of getting caught, not fear of punishment from school, but fear of losing everything. Donovan approached one last time, his shadow falling over Troy like a closing curtain.

“You should know something,” he said quietly. Troy lifted his tear-streaked face. “This isn’t the end,” Donovan said. “This is the beginning.” Troy swallowed hard because he believed him.
