She lost balance.
Rachel fell hard onto the grass beside the seating area, knocking one white chair over with her.
The crowd went silent.
Simone remained standing several feet away.
Her hands stayed raised for a moment.
Rachel did not immediately get up.
Simone lowered her hands.
She did not approach.
She did not kick.
She did not say anything triumphant.
She simply breathed.
Megan looked from Rachel to Simone.
For one tense second, students expected Megan to attack too.
She did not.
Instead, she shouted that Simone had assaulted Rachel.
Several students immediately responded.
“No!”
“She swung first!”
“Rachel went at her!”
Phones remained raised.
Simone looked at Megan.
“That’s why you wanted cameras, right?”
Megan’s expression changed.
She did not answer.
Simone turned away.
Popcorn still covered the floor.
A few kernels remained tangled in her braids.
The broom leaned against the yellow bucket.
Simone picked it up.
Janelle finally reached her.
“Leave it.”
Simone looked at the mess.
For months she had been told, directly and indirectly, that cleaning somehow proved where she belonged.
Now picking up the broom felt impossible.
She let it go.
Holloway arrived with two teachers.
“What happened?”
Everyone answered at once.
Simone said nothing.
She looked at Rachel on the grass.
Then at Megan.
Then at the popcorn.
Finally she said, “Check the videos.”
That became one of the most important decisions of the night.
The first clip posted online began with Simone countering Rachel.
It showed almost none of the confrontation beforehand.
Within thirty minutes, students who had not attended movie night were arguing in group chats over whether Simone had started a fight.
Then a longer video appeared.
It began with Simone sweeping.
Viewers watched Megan approach from behind.
They saw the popcorn container lift.
They saw the food pour over Simone’s head.
They heard Megan say she now had something else to clean.
