Ellis asked for comparable examples involving Tyler Bennett. Kimberly did not have any.

The directives remained.

For almost six weeks, peace followed. Simone began wondering whether formal boundaries had finally accomplished what warnings could not.

She focused on classes, college applications, and Student Activities logistics. Movie-night planning became one of the few things she genuinely enjoyed at Ridgeway.

She designed a map placing trash bins near exits rather than directly in viewing areas. She created volunteer rotations so nobody would spend the entire event cleaning. She asked Holloway to schedule every committee member for at least fifteen minutes of post-event cleanup.

Megan objected. She said hosts should not be cleaning because they needed to interact with students.

Simone replied that the movie ended after hosting duties ended. Megan rolled her eyes but agreed.

Rachel also disliked the rotation. She said concessions already involved enough work.

Holloway sided with Simone. Everyone working the event would help clean.

The argument seemed minor. In retrospect, it gave Megan another reason to connect Simone with the role she had already assigned her.

February brought college decisions. Simone received acceptance from the University of North Carolina, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Howard, with several other applications still pending. Ridgeway posted senior acceptances on a board near counseling.

Megan saw Howard beneath Simone’s name and said nothing directly. Later, however, a private message reached Simone through another student.

Megan had written, Of course Howard wants Ridgeway’s diversity scholarship star. Perfect story.

Rachel replied with a laughing reaction.

Simone turned the message over to Foster. Megan received one day of in-school suspension for violating the no-contact directive.

The consequence shifted her resentment into obsession.

She began telling friends Simone could get people punished simply by existing. Rachel agreed and said administrators were terrified of the optics of disciplining a Black scholarship student.

Neither seemed to notice the circular logic. They repeatedly targeted Simone, received consequences, then used those consequences as evidence that Simone received special treatment.

Janelle explained it simply. “They keep touching the stove and blaming you because it’s hot.”

Simone laughed. “That might be the smartest thing you’ve ever said.”

“Write it down.”

“I absolutely will not.”

The humor helped, but Simone was tired. She had started adjusting where she walked to avoid Megan.

She changed lunch tables. She stopped going to the student center alone after meetings.

At Student Activities sessions, she positioned herself near Holloway. None of those choices were dramatic enough to look like fear.

Together, they represented how harassment altered ordinary life. Simone was spending energy managing people who insisted she had too much power.

March brought the movie-night conflict into focus. Holloway finalized committee assignments.

Simone would arrive three hours before the event for setup and stay through the first forty-five minutes of cleanup. Megan would arrive ninety minutes early for hosting preparation.

Rachel would operate popcorn concessions with three other students. Everyone would rotate through cleanup afterward.

Megan asked whether Simone had assigned herself cleanup because she enjoyed bossing people around. Simone said Holloway approved the schedule.

“That’s not what I asked.”

Simone looked at her. “We’re not supposed to be having this conversation.”

Megan laughed and walked away.

Holloway witnessed it. Megan received another documented violation but no suspension because the exchange was brief and not overtly discriminatory.

Simone wondered aloud to Tara that night how many “brief” violations eventually became one serious problem. Tara said that was a question the school should already be asking.

David finally attended a meeting with Principal Ellis. He did not threaten anyone.

He brought Simone’s timeline.

There were thirty-one entries.

Ellis read all of them. For the first time, the school opened a cumulative pattern review rather than processing the newest complaint alone.

That review was still underway when movie night happened.

The timing mattered. Megan knew investigators were looking backward through months of behavior.

She believed Simone had caused it.

Rachel believed the same.

Private messages later showed their frustration. Megan wrote that Simone had made Ridgeway treat her like a racist.

Rachel responded that everybody was scared of getting canceled. Megan said she wished people could see how Simone really acted when adults were not protecting her.

Rachel wrote, She probably won’t do anything. She just reports people.

Megan answered, Then maybe we give her something worth reporting.

Investigators later spent hours discussing what that line meant. Megan insisted she intended only another joke.

The movie-night video would show what followed.

April arrived with unusually warm weather. Ridgeway scheduled the event for a Friday evening when the forecast predicted clear skies and temperatures staying above sixty until midnight.

The courtyard transformed after school. Facilities staff installed a giant projection screen at one end, string lights crossed above rows of folding chairs, and student volunteers set up a popcorn station near the side walkway.

Simone arrived at four. She wore black pants, white sneakers, a fitted white shirt, and a black bomber jacket because temperatures would fall after sunset.

Her long braids hung down her back. She carried a clipboard for the first hour and spent the next two moving chairs, checking extension cords, placing trash cans, and directing younger volunteers.
